Show ,( THE THUNDERBIRD • SOlJfHERN UTAH UNIVERSITY • TI-iURSDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1992 • PAGE 9 Students need to prepare for cold BY ALECIA THO MPSON Thunderbird Staff Writer Outside of preparing for finals, SUU students must also prepare themselves for the colder temperatures. This time of year is not only accompanied by snowy weather, but the common cold as well. In order to prevent getting sick during these up and coming winter months, "Students must treat the colder weather responsibly," said Kay Messerly, director of Student Health Services. Messerly encourages students to use their common sense as fur as dress. "A warm coat, gloves, hats and long pants are a must for these bitter temperatures," she said. "Cold weather does not necessarily mean pneumonia," said Messerly, but if students do nor rake proper care of their health, "the common cold could develop into a much more serious illness." If students have any questions or are worried about their health, Messerly encourages students to call or visit her at Student Health Services, located in Manianita Coun, CZ. Because attending class and being alen while there are vital, avoiding d1e common cold is crucial to all students. So although the common cold becomes all too common this time of year, if students are responsible about their health, they just might prevent themselves from getting sick this winter. Male graduate student would like to receive correspondence for friendship: Please write: SU students may be basking in the idea of longer holidays this year. Thanksgiving recess for students ran nine days and full quaner finals end Dec. 11, giving students a 23-0ay break from classes, since they don't have to return until Jan. 4. Are SUU students "getting off easy" this year? Not at all said Sterling R. Church, vice president of student services. For the second year in a row, Thanksgiving recess was a solid week, he explained, but the extra time has been compensated by beginning full quarter earlier than in past years. The longer Thanksgiving break gives students more travel time, among other advantages, Church said. "In the past, we foun d that students were taking off for the whole week, anyway," he said. Traditionally, students also get about half of December off as a break between fall and winter quaners. This year, it was just the way the calendar worked out that makes the C hristmas/New Year's break a bit longer, Church noted. And the students aren't getting off easy at all. "There are actually more instruLti:m days full quaner than in either winter or spring quarter," Church said.
