'Birds outlast ISU in finale 29-28 BY JAY HINTON Thunderbird Spo,ru Editor It took four tries for the SUU football team, but the Thunderbirds finally picked up a win over Division J. AA Idaho State. The 'Birds puUed out a 29-28 vicrory over the Bengals Saturday night at Holt Arena in Pocatello, Id. The win over the Bengals gave the Thunderbirds a 2-1 record against the Big Sky Conference this season with wins over Northern Arizona, in the first game of the season and the win over the Bengals. SUU's loss came to Weber State University in its second game of the season. In last season's tilt with Idaho State the two teams ended in grid lock at 35-35 and Saturday night's game showed possibilities of the same out come. The Bengals scored late in the fourth to cut the game to 29-28 and elected to go for the win. SUU's Chris Kruger pulled Robert Johnson tO the carpet to preseIVe the win for the Thunderbirds. After SUU's Darren DeGracie picked off a Bengal pass, the SUU offense topped off a 45-yard drive when Kevin McKeiman plunged one yard for the score. Jason Parsons, who replaced Matt Gordon for the field goal kicking duties, had his PAT blocked. Bengal punter Randy Nate pinned the 'Birds on their owil one-yard line, but Robins successfully guided the Thunderbirds 99 yards to pay dirt. Robins hit Mike Key with the nine-yard strike, but the twopoint conversion failed. O n the insuing kick-off Carlos Reed, off a fake reverse, raced 82 yards to cut the SUU lead to 12-7 and took the lead with 3:07 left in the half at 14-12. SUU and ISU traded scores throughout the remainder of the game. Parsons made it 15-14 with a 34-yards field goal. !SU went ahead 22-15. SUU tied the score on Daniel Harris' two-yard run and Moynier' s 31-yard catch from Robins and Parsons' PAT made it 29-22. Kruger's defensive heroics with 8:25 remaining sealed the game for the 'Birds. McKeirnan led SUU with 82 yards rushing with one TD and Zed Robinson had 80 yards rushing. Mike Key hauled in eight catches for 119 yards and one score, while Ryan Moynier had four grabs for 101 yards and a TD. Rick Robins had another stellar outing by going 1626 for 248 yards two T Ds and one INT. Matanda Doss led the defensive corps with 10 tackles, Marc DeCol had nine and Kruger eight Golfers host Peppermill Invite today Golfers from seven western universities will battle today and tomorrow in the 54-hole Southern Utah University/Peppermill Classic to be played in Mesquite, NV. In addition to the host Thunderbirds, teams slated to compete are Utah State U niversity, University of Idaho, Boise State University, Grand Canyon University, Long Beach State U n iversity, and the U niversity of Southern Colorado.. To date, only three SUU golfers have qualified for the five-member Thunderbird traveling squad. • Guaranteed spots for the early week competition are junior Matt Oldroyd, sophomore Cory Monsen, and freshman Jon Fister. Other golfers still in the running for the remainir/,g two positions include freshman Todd Mullin, Tom King, Ken Hollifield, sophomore Ryan Goff and junior Jason Reynolds. "During our fall competition, we have had a lot of questions answered about the abilities of a squad that includes a bunch of very young players," said Golf Coach John Evans. "We have made significant progress as a team, and several of our players are showing good promise.• A pair of former SUU basketball players will meet again tonight when the Thunderbirds present "Back to the Future," a program to introduce fans to the 1992-93 men's and women's teams. The activities will begin at 7 p.m. in the Centrum. "We have the prospects for a great basketball season, and we want to generate a bunch of excitement for the programs," said SUU Thunderbird Athletic Club Promotions Director Cal Rollins. "The program is free and is planned to offer plenty of fun for the entire family." Bill Evans, starting his first full year as head coach of the Thunderbird men's team, last wore the SUU uniform in 1972. Joining Evans and Larry Shurtliff, head coach of the women's team, will be another former a Thunderbird Brad Steinke, a sports anchor for KSL Television in Salt Lake City. Steinke will serve a master of ceremonies for the 90-minute program which will feature introductions and skiU demonstrations by members of the men's and women's teams. Also scheduled is entertainment from a number of university students groups including Acclamation, Waukeenyans, and cheerleaders. Everyone attending "Back tO the Future" will be given complimentary tickets for the Thunderbird men's season opener tomorrow, when it hosts The Slovenian National team at 7:30 p.m. in the Centrum. The Lady Thunderbird squad will opens its 1992-93 season Dec. 1 in the Marriot Center with BYU. Brad St.tinke Harriers finish season with 17th, 19th finishes BY JAKE CUDNEY Thunderbird Sports Writer The SUU cross country teams traveled tO their last meet of the season Saturday for the NCAA District Seven Cross Country Championships Salt Lake City. The women's team finished l 7th out of the 19 teams who participated, and the men's team finished 19th out of 21 teams. Anna Pett led the women finishing in the 38th position with a time of 18:30 in the five kilometer romp through Rose Park Golf Course. Cami Casper was the second Thunderbird woman tO finish in the 78th position with a time of 19: 1 7. Cami Gillman finished 107th in 20:34, Erika Timm finished 108th in 20:35, and Shaliece Procror came in with a time of 20:51 in the 111 th position to round out the top SU women finishers. The SU men were led by Phil Woolston who finished in the 41 st position with a time of32:02 in the 10 kilometer race. Woolston was followed by Travis Anderson, who lias finished second behind W oolston in every race this season , finished 107th at 34:05. Steve Allen, Jeff Snow and Russ Jensen fin ished out the top five Thunderbird men to finish. Allen finished I 12th in 34:28, Snow finished 135th in 36:43, and Jensen came in with a time of 37:45 in the 138th position. Colorado U niversity claimed the top men's team finish with a team score of 77, followed by lITEP and BYU who finished with scores of 106 and 120, respectively. NAU finished first in the women's race with 48 points, followed by BYU with 52 points and Colorado with 125 points. Both SUU squad finished better than San Diego State and Eastern Washington. The men finished with 533 points, 14 points better than SDSU and 41 points better than Eastern W ashington . The women finished with 413 points better than Eastern Washington's 522 and SDSU's 557. |
