The program is comprised of a series of commitrees which were formed during freshmen orientations, which involved incoming fmhmen. The orientations were held throughout the summer. The committees were formed based on ideas the freshmen would like to see implemented and are composed of sevaal sruotDIB, one of tbem being the conuniuee had. Ranging in complexity and diversity of ideas, many interests were COYCred including the environmental issue with ideas for recycling programs topping the list along with planting trees. Ideas for intramurals were discussed in one committee which hopes to aid the intramural program by adding such sports as beach volleyball and malcing arrangements for new basketball courts. Committees were also formed regarding communi.ty service projects including ideas for a haunted house and a Sul>for.Santa program. Some freshmen will also have the opportunity of being on lord's presidential committre. These students will have the opportunity to deal with some of the issues and concerns of srudent government and will function as an active part ofSUUSA. Although still in the process of finalizing dlC8C committees, SUUSA feels tbat the committee program is a fttV sucassful one and will be a key in helping freshmen feel involved and at home atSUU. Open recreation provides release from school stress BY JACOB CUDNEY Thunderbird Staff Wrirer Students loohng for an outlet in which to release their excess energy and a break from the everyday routine of the school year will find that SUU's open recreation program provides this release. The facilities, which include basketball, volleyball and racquetball courts, as well as a swimming pool, a weight room and a fitness room, are provided by the physical education department and are located in the P.E.Building. Six basketball hoops are provided for students interested in playing basketball, however, Director of Srudent Activities John Angell explained that it would be much easier to play if students limited the number of games to four half-court games. Two volleyball and two racquetball courts are also provided for srudent use. 1be hours that courts are scheduled to be open are set up around~ in the physical education department and the intramural program's schedule. Open recreation facilities are available for srudent use on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. On Saturdays the hours are from noon to 5 p.m. Arrangements can be made at the cage, located on the lx>ttom 6oor of the P.E. Building, to resetve the courts and equipment and to set up playing times for all activities. Open rec. is provided to srudents with current SUU identi.fication for no additional charge. According to Angell, "srudent fees pay for the supervisers, lifeguards and all other staff. We use all of our own students to run the activities. The srudents pay their fees, and then the money goes to pay the srudent wages." Angell believes that the number of students that use the facilities is well worth having the program. Ange.II said that throughout their coUege careers probably 75 percent of the srudent3 will have used the facilities at one time or another. For those inlerested in aerobics, a free class is taught in the P.E. Building from 5-6 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. 911 South Main Street 586-2345 A nice place for lunch Fresh Sandwich, Chips & a Yogurt Cup $297 Try our new Salad Bar or our famous Soup in a Bread Bowl. 1 • |
