Show THE THUNDERBIRD• SOUTHERN lJfAH UNIVERSITY · MONDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1992 • PAGE 7 SU Multi-Cultural Club provides representation BY CATHERINE HENDERSON Thunderbird Sr.aft Writer Southern U tah University has been successful in drawing a number of American minority and international students, according to SUUSA Multi-Cultural Representative Asai Gilman. However, Gilman asserts that more of these students would dennitdy enhance the university experience for all students by adding much needed diversity to this campus. Students for Campus Diversity, founded by Gilman, in part functions as an attraction to draw a variety of students to SUU. Though the club is primarily a niche for multi-cultural students, who haven't belonged to any campus entity in the past, it is truly meant as a vehicle to serve all students, and anyone who wants to be represented is welcome, he said. Aside from representation, Gilman cites the benefits of Students for Campus Diversity membership as leadership development, exposure to different cultures and the support of student government According to Gilman, the task to which this organization will set about is two.fold. The first goal is to promote more cultural understanding among dub members through sharing traditions and customs. Secondly, it is to educate students, staff and faculty through activities sponsored by the club. Currently the activities planned include a booth at the Homecoming carnival featuring international and American foods, a float in the Homecoming parade. a booth during November's Substance Abuse Week, activities for Human Rights Day and a nine course international meal sold in the Student Center during International week. Gilman expresses that his greatest hope is that the club will continue after he graduates, not only for social but for educational purposes as well. Those whoi wish more information about Students for Campus Diversity or to become a member, students can contact Gilman in the Student Government Offices, 586-7765.
