Bean, who has d1recred Hello Doll:y and ~ Elephant Man among others for SUU, will be employed by Alan Warner Inc., a theatrical booking company which handles road company productions of major Broadway shows. Bean is currently directing the 1920s musical No No Nan~tu for W ayne State University in Detroit, Mich. He will reru rn to SUU Oct. 15 to train his replacement for roughly a month before leaving. Bean's leaving necessitates changing the lineup of the SUU 1992-93 theatre season . 01:ympul on my Mind which Bean would have directeJ Jan. 28, 29, 30 and Feb. 4, 5 and 6 wtll be replaced by the musical Chirogo tO be directed by Fred C. Adams. Adams will also direct Cicy of Angels later in the season. Applications for the marketing direcror position will be accepted until October I. They should be taken to the office of Scott Phillips, managing director of the Utah Shakespearean Festival. More than 100 applicatio ns have been submitted in the past three weeks. Prospects have been described as "amazing," by Phillips, who further explains, "We have received applications from all sections of the country." Applications should include a letter of interest, a resume, and th ree letters of recommendation. No phone calls are being taken. Musician Winter to play in Thursday Convocation Musician Paul Winter will present the first Convocation of the 1992-93 SUU school year, Sept 24 at 11 a.m. in the Auditorium. Winter is a leader in the New Age field with his own brand of "Earth Music" which, to q uote Smithsonian, "continues to dude easy definition," by combining jazz, folk, ethnic and classical influences with the voices of whales, loons, wolves and other sounds from narure. Winter's interen in re-linking people with nature has led him to explore and record in outdoor locations such as the Grand Canyon, and Siberia's Lake Baikal. W inter's achievemen ts in music reach back to 1961, when the Paul Winter Sextet won the Intercollegiate Jazz Festival, earning a six-month tou r of Latin America sponsored by the State Department One year later Jackie Kennedy invited the sextet to play at the White House, giving them the notable achievement of being the first jazz group ever to play there. In 1971 Winter's album Road was taken to the moon aboard Apollo XV, the crew naming two moon craters after songs from the album. The Convocation is co-sponsored by New Music Utah, which, in tum, is a co-sponsor of the "New M usic Across America: Utah" festival which wi!J be held Oct. 2-4 in Springdale. Other upcoming music-related convocations will include Dallas Taylor, former percussion ist for such rock legends as Jimi Hendrix, Eric C lapton and C rosby, Stills, and Nash, lecturing at the Nov. 12 Substance Abuse Week Convocation. Taylor will discuss h is own experiences with substance abuse as he plans to chronicle them in "Appetite for Destruction: Drugs, Alcohol and Recovery." Fresh.
