SOtmlERN lJfAH UNIVERSITY · TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1992 • PAGE 17 BY BEN WEST Thunderbird Ans Ediurr This summer was a productive period for SUU's Braithwaite Gallery, which hosted four different exhibits of local and national talent at the same time. "Thrilled," is how gallery curator/ director Valerie Kidrick describes her feellngs at having acquired an exhibit of 17th century etchings and paintings from the Utah Museum of Fine Ans, an exhibit which shared gallery space with touring works from the National Watercolor Society and displays of Utah Shakespearean Festival costume/set designs plus the additional festival-related exhibit of costumes worn in past productions. Over 7,000 people viewed these exhibits, a number which Kidrick calls a "100 percent improvement," when compared to past summer attendances. Kidrick credits both a highly visible new gallery sign and Shakespearean Festival coordinators' encouraging festivalgoers to visit the gallery as reasons for improved gallery attendan According to Kidn,Jc£!be summer season's only disappoinonent was that the National Watercolor Society cihibit could not be shown, as originally planned, in the new conference center, which was at that time under construction. Kidrick explains, however, that the watercolor exhibit's impact was not adversely affected by being displayed in the gallery's lobby. While the gallery is currently closed, allowing time for the taking of inventory an d recarpeting, it will reopen for a full season Oct. 1, with a timely exhibit on Christopher Columbus and his era. Other plans include the National Names exhibit, which collects the names of Aids victims on quilts. Slated for Dec., Kidrick said she feels the re is "much community support," for this show.
