Numerous stories about Vietnameseilliterate teachers (the audacity!!) that neglect refugee students and the valiant fight of Utah's 85,000 repressed Latinos cover regional newspapers. Even SUU is guilty of PC faux pas. Native American Month, dedicated to the enlightenment of us monopigmented individuals, was , grossly mislabeled. Why burden Native Americans with a name some Eurocentric mapmaker came up with? To be politically correct, it should have been, "Indigenous People's· Month." Although the intentions were good at first, the political correctness movement has since degenerated into a fight to see who can be the most underrepresented, oppressed group. I have never considered race or gender a liability or an excuse for mediocrity. Discrimination on any basis is wrong, but spreading linguistic ''warm fuzzies" or disguising "reverse discrimination" won' t solve the problem. Alas, as long as the status quo remains, I, along with my white male buddies, will take our place with the spotted owl, the humpback whale, the kakapo and the freedom of expression on the endangered list. But for now, I think I'll get off my differently-sized, monopigmented posterior, get in my non-PC, Eurocentric, not-made-in-America sedan, and go for a drive on Cedar Mountain with my personof-gender friend. Alpha Chi in top 1O percent BY MALINDA STATHIS Thunderbird Comspondmt Our Way to Say Thank You End the school year with sizzling savings May 18 thru June 6 Don't blow your chance to save on our daily specials!! SUU BOOKSTORE Good grades can afford one many wvant.ages, and membership in the Alpha Chi honors program is one of them. But only the upper 10 percent of SUU's juniors and seniors receive the chance, as a grade point average of 3. 7 to 3.75 or more is required to join. Students having transferred from another university are also eligible, transfer credit is figured into the grade point average and a conservative estimate is made. In addition, each person chosen from the top 10 percent of the student body must also fall into the upper 10 percent of their department. In the fall invitations are given to those who have been chosen. Those interested in the program should contact Associate Professor of Language and Literature and advisor to the program, James Harrison, in the spring before candidates receive invitations. "We'll see to it in the spring to get them in," Harrison said. According to Harrison, membership reflects well on a student's resume. "Well, yes it looks good. And it sets the person apart from someone else. Alpha Chi isn't as well known as Sigma Chi, but having Alpha Chi on a resume looks good.''
