"Safe Rides," which provides studen ts and the community with a n alternative to drinking and driving, is sponsored by Sigma Nu and assisted by Phi Alpha Beta, Chi Sigma Upsilon and Delta Sigma Chi. The coordinator of the program is Dave Garney, a Sigma Nu member in charge of the fraternity's philanthropic effort. " Safe Rides" is now available Friday and Saturday evenings between 10 p.m . and 2 a.m. The phone number is 590-RIDE. Garney's chief motivation is to save the lives of those who drink and those who don't. " If you're drinking and driving you are taking more than j ust your life in your hands, you are talcing everyone else's life in your hands," Garney said . According to Garney, all the costs of the program have been donated . CommNet 2000 donated a cellular phone along with its NOW AVAILABLE! • Laundry • Dry Cleaning • Drapes • • Professional Leather Cleaning • Pillows • Every Tuesday, All $1 washers are 1/2 price! Main St. 586-1405 Open Daily 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Last load by 9 p.m. Current Student 1.0 . required operational costs to provide volunteer drivers with the convenience to do other things between calls. A similar program failed last year in which drivers were confined to the Student Center while on call. This year, RoUographics donated posters, Budweiser offered to pass out fliers to their customers, insurance forms are being donated by M obil Oil and the Greeks will provide the drivers . Despite the cooperation, Garney said the program has had setbacks. February 12 was the original starting date, but high insurance costs and rigid operation procedures slowed the effort, because, Garney said, "Safe Rides" is similar to a ta.xi service. Donations are being sought to help with the high insurance costs and pay for gasoline. In addition, Garney says some elements of the community fear that this will only encourage drinking. However , according to Garney there is already a drinking problem. " Don't drink and drive, we'll do the driving for you," Garney said. For more information call 586-1 153 or 590-RIDE. " The purpose of the competition is to presen t the quality and depth of projects," said Bob Salmon, SIFE adviser. He said it is important for the team to compete to give SUU the exposure it deserves. The team is presenting the projects it dio this year to a panel of business executives. According to Derek Bohne, SIFE president, the team's best project was the R ural Young Entrepreneur Search, which involved the search for high school students who started the most successful businesses in Utah. SUU's SIFE, one of 350 such organizations in the country, is the only one in Utah. This year is the first year the program has operated and according to Salmon, its purpose is to inform people about free enterprise and entrepreneurship. Salmon said, "We're very good at this, we just need to get out there and show them." Chemicals on lawns this week The grounds department is spraying chemicals on SU's lawns beginning Wedne.s day. The spraying will last two weeks, but no specific days are known yet, since the spraying can only be done on days with no wind. Students will still be able to walk on the lawns, but those · with allergies need to be aware ' of the chemicals, which are used to control bug population. For those students with allergies, specific spraying dates and chemical types are available by calling C hris Gale, 586-7785.
