Thunderbird thinclads continue improvement Page sets new mark in 400 meter run Going into the second third of the season, it is apparent that at least a couple of SUU outdoor track records will be seriously challenged and another threatened by members of the Thunderbird track and field squad. In fact, one fell just this weekend. Lalena Page erased a two· year old mark by Tiffany Gentry of 59.50 in the 400 meters when she breezed to a 58. 73 at the Mark Faldmo Invitational in Logan Saturday. Also expected to be challenged this year are women 's outdoor records in the 800 meters and the 1500 meters. Freshman Kristin Shaw ran relatively close to the outdoor record during the indoor season, and Heather Wimey may be within striking distance of the 1500 meter mark. Both the 800 and 1500 records were established in 1981 oy Mary Damiani (who earned NAIA all-America honors) and are two of the three most venerable SUU women's records. To beat Darniani's 800 record of 2:13.43, Shaw will need to cut nearly 7.5 seconds from her best 800 indoor time of 2:20.70. She ran a 2:26.69 outdoors at Logan Saturday. Damian i's 1500 meter record is 4:32.04. Witney has run an indoor mile (1609 meters) in 4:51.77 and turned a 4:42 Saturday. Sprinter/ hurdler Debbie C hild could pose a challenge to SUU records in almost any of the hurdle or sprint events. SUU school records in the men's competition appear more d ifficult to break, according to Maggio. He is pleased, however, with a number of men's performances during the indoor season. Strength on the men's squad appears to be in the sprints and the 800-meter even ts. Virgil Clark, Colby Sanders, David Doner and Rodger Melvin have all shown ability in the sprints. Gary Hamblin and Bob Spalliero have been the top 1wo T-Birds in the 800. "We have a number of decent sprinters, and we have some individuals in some of the longer races who would show continued improvement during the remainder of the season. We expect 10 see a bundle of new personal records from our runners,'' Maggio says. At the Faldmo meet, Witney finished first in the 1500 meters in 4:42, while teammates Anna Pett and Erika Timm finished seventh and eight with times of 5:22.5 and 5:33.4, respectively. SUU's Child placed seventh in the 100 meter hurdles with a Lal.tna Page, 400 meter rtcord holder. time of 15.99 and sixth in the high jump at 5'. In field even ts, Becky Schofield placed third in the javelin with a throw of 126'10". For the men in track events, Clark and Sanders finished fourth and sixth in the 100 meters with times of 11.05 and 11.12, respectively. In the men's 4x100 meters the SUU team placed fourth with a 43.28 time. In field events, Jason Tabor finishecl 12th with a throw of 40' in the shot put. Upcoming meets are scheduled at Provo; La Jolla, Calif.; and Flagstaff, Ariz. ; ATTENTION ALL THOSE WHO MAY HAVE A CLAIM FOR Auto • Home • Life • Commercial and especially student renters insurance America can depend on Farmers Roger Olcott Olcott Insurance Agency, Auto, Home, life, Commercial 444 S.
