Show !PAGE10 LETTERS Vote qualified not popular TO THE EDITOR: Never in the history of SUU elections has there been a successful write-in vote. To my knowledge there has never been a successful write-in campaign in our nation's history. There is a write-in candidate named Rebecca Fischer for vice president of activities I was disgusted to realize that once again the studen body played into the popularity contest and not the qualifications contest when she lost the primary election rat race .. ll's time we got someone in office who works hard to better the school and not her image . It's time we got out of our apathet ic worlds and let our voices be heard. Fischer 1s the most qualified person on this for the office of vice president of activities: She is currently the secretary of the activities VP and is the workhorse of the team. She is a "behind-the-scenes· person. She listens to students, believes 1n students and believes she is no better than any other s1udent. She will work hard for this university and its students. Compare each cand idate 's qualifications . Look at their platforms. Make the decision who is the most qualified to represent you. Consider this a warning for the campaign that is about to begin for Fischer. She's the best person for the job ; it' s that simple. Don't play the popularity game .. .make history on March 28 and write in Rebecca Fischer for vice president of activities. Let's learn from history, not let it repeat itself once again. I have been to all but a handful like: ·This is a really good bill. I agree with Sen. So and Such. The students deserve it. We should pass of mee ·ngs this year. I sit there until the.bitter end, taking notes in on my legal notepad, then I write the story. I write unbiased news stories about the ir meetings, free from any personal opin ion (yes, painful for me). I wished I could write a column and tell it like it is. The senate only has about $300 left to work with. its days of long-winded meetings are just about over-time for a.good roast. If you've never been to a student senate meeting you really have missed a good show. Forget TV. I get my high drama from the senate. I've seen senators burst Into tears, storm out of the room, and knocked off their high horses. I wonder who would be o ed off the Island" If the senators could do that kind of thing. I am far from impartial when I attend the meetings. I laugh and groan along with the best of them. Some senators are real table-thumpers. They jump up every chance they get to ridicule or bolster each bill. They, question all angles of a bill, even their own. They demand to know if money can be found somewhere else. They get emo ·onal, they are a study of dramatic facial expressions and transparent body language. They're stubborn, if their bill is getting shot down or looking as if it will receive less money than requested , they think that repea ing the same argument over and over and over i s going to change somebody's mind. Table-lhumpers make the meetings exciting; they also make the meetings long . Get two tablethumpers on opposite sides of a bin and you can call the pizza guy becau se nobody's going anywhere for a couple of hours. Some senators never speak; they might as well be mu1e. The only time you hear their voices is when they are the sponsors of a bill or on the investigating committee of a bill. In those cases, they have to speak. VVhen they do speak, they usually say something it" Mutes, get a personality already. You're a public figure; remember what happened to Al Gore. Somewhere between the table-thumpers and the mutes are the balanced senators, and that is the kind I would want to be. The balanced senators pay close attention to debates and cast serious. meaningful looks around the chambers. They speak, but they know when to shut the hell up. Balanced senators whisper discretely among themselves and can communicate telepathically; the subtle nod of the head or tapping finger is all they need to get their point across. Then there's your screwball, miscellaneous senator. Eyes go rolling up to heaven when s/he gets up to speak. I'm not naming names, you had to be there. The senate even had a little scandal this year-not a huge sex-lies-money-laundering scandal, but a scandal just the same. You see , there was this bill to purchase calculators. They debated it forEVER before it finally passed and 20 calculators were ordered. Now we're not talking abou1 the cheap, used-onlyto-balance-the-checkbook calculators. We're talking the $150 graphing calculators. During Chr istma s Break , three of them disappeared from the SUUSA offices_ At first it was a big hush-hush kind of deal, but the senators don't care anymore so I can blab it to all the worfd. There are no specific suspects, but the senators have their suspicions (you have to ask them yourself). The senators would like you to know that the calculatorg are available for check-out at the Library. They are almost always being used. Is this "Temptation Island" or what? I've had my fun with the senators in this column, but seriously, I have great respect for them. I know how hard they work. It's not all tears and tempests. They take their jobs seriously. they take their responsibility to the students seriously. Your senate has spent your money wisely this year. If only I could have voted loo. |
