The clubs expected 200 people to get involved from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., said Annie Elkington, a sophomore math_ education major from Sandy, Utah , and service comm ittee chair. The day included making quilts and blankets, painting toys and puzzles and creating hygiene kits. The majority of the items will be given to the sort center for distribution . • Four members of the Wrestling Club qualified for nationals at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association conference championship. The club competed in San Diego , Calif. on Feb. 24. Brock Moore, a senior PE/health major from Pleasant Grove, Utah, won first place . Luke Lyman, a senior psy"chology major from Delta, Utah, also qualified for first against his opponent. Brandon Stubbs, ·a junior physical therapy major from Cedar City placed second and Matt Griffith , a sophomore psychology major from.Ely, Nev., came in th ird. These four men qualified for the · national competition to take place in Dallas , Texas , on March 9. The Wrestling Club practices Monday-Thursday at 5 p.m. in PE 212. Anyone interested in becoming involved should contact Moore at 867-1453 . • The Waukeenyans placed fifth overall at the USA Nationals in Las Vegas Feb. 24-25 . The Waukeenyans attend one competition per year, due to funding, Jody Gatten, a junior business education major from Taylorsville, Utah, and team captain, said. The dancers competed against Boise State University , University of Kentucky and University of Arizona , among others. "For Cedar City to go and place fifth is really , really good ." Gatten sa id. The Waukeenyans will be performing on April 6 in the Centrum for their end of year show. • An SUU professor and 1985 graduate of SUU, who is widely known as a media ethics scholar. will speak at a forum sponsored by the SUU chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists on Monday, Marc.h 5, at 5:30 p.m. Paul Husselbee, as~istant professor of communication, will answer the question , "Is med ia ethics an oxymoron?" in a one-hour presentation in the Great Basin Room of the Sharwan Smith Center. "When people hear ·media' and 'ethics' in the same sentence . they tend to chuckle and ask, 'Do the media have any ethics?'" Husselbee said. "I hope to sh.o w that there are serious, principled , ethical journalists who are concerned about doing the right thing ." Part of the presentation will entail a discussion of the mass media's role in a free , information-based society. · Husselbee has been a member of SP J's national ethics committee since 1996. He also serves as research chair of the media ethics division of the Association for Education in Journali sm and Mass Communication, an international association of journalism professors . |
