Show !MONDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2001 STATE PROPOSED UTAH TAX CUT IS LARGER THAN EXPECTED: The Utah legi},lature is poised to deliver a $24 .5 million tax cut to residents. roughly $20 m1llron more than either the ~ Democrats or Gov. Mike Leavitt Mike Leavitt proposed. The GOP relief package is structured so that most Utahns should see some benefit-about $70 to $100 per household Central to the plan is a one-time, across-the-board $18 million adjustment to the state income tax. But Republican leaders are shying away from a proposal to annually adjust Utah's income-tax brackets for inflation, which would have eliminated an invisible , annual tax hike. The plan is short of goals set by fiscal conservatives. It also shuns a state Tax Review Commission recommendation hat inflation be inserted into Utah's tax equation , keeping the tax structure in line with purchasing power. The Tax Commission urged that tax brackets be adjus ed . beginning rn 2001 , using the Consumer Price Index as a yardstick SANPETE MAN FOUND DEAD NEAR FILLMORE: Millard County sheriffs detectives are Investigating the murder of a Sanpete County man found dead Thursday near Fillmore . Law enforcement officials said they found the body of Virgil L. Barney . 67 . at the Interstate 70 and Interstate 15 interchange . A motorist saw the body and called the Millard County Sheriffs Office about 7 a.m. Thursday. Investigators are looking for Barney's 1996 gold-colored Mercury Cougar with license plate 852 JZ.V. Sheriffs detectives are not releasing any other details, but are asking the public's help in locating Barney's car. TWO BYU FOOTBALL PLAYERS FACE CHARGES OF THEFT: Two Brigham Young University football players were arrested early Thursday for allegedly shoplifting a six-pack of Tecate beer and a tuna salad sandwich . Running back Marcus Whalen and defensive lineman Brent Pollock face misdemeanor charges of retail theft and underage drinking after undercover pohce said they saw the players steal the ,terns from a ?-Eleven store on University Avenue in Provo. BYU Coach Gary Crowton suspended Whalen indefinitely and dismissed Pollock from the team. Crowton did not commen about his action Pollock already was on university proballon and had been suspended for the Cougars· first two games next seasorT after pleading guilty in December to charges of underage dnnking, public 1ntox1cat1on and urinating in pubhc. A judge was going to have those charges dismissed if Pollock stayed out of trouble for a year. Pollock and Whalen have court dates March 22 . The university Honor Code O ce also is investigating the incident. NATION TWO DIE IN NAVY PLANE CRASH OFF FLORIDA COAST: A Navy jet crashed into the Atlantic on Wednesday, killing the instructor and test pilot, the Navy said. The T-45A Goshawk was on its way to the USS Eisenhower from the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville when it crashed at about 5:30 p.m . Navy spokesman Pat Dooling said . The Navy said both men ejected just before the crash . The T-45A was based at the Naval Air Station in Kingsville , Texas, and had been temporarily assigned to a detachment in Jacksonville. Killed were Navy Lt. Gregory Fulco, an instructor pilot based in Kingsville, and Air Force Capt Justin Sanders, a test pilot based at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Okla ., said Master Chief Jim Rostohar, a Navy spokesman in Kingsville. INFANT HAS 'BLOODLESS' SURGERY: The ?-month-old son of Jehovah's Witnesses received part of his grandmother's liver in one of the first "bloodless" surgeries of its kmd performed on an infant, doctors said The family's religion opposes blood transfusions , which are typical in pediatric liver operations. Instead of using the usual two to three units of transfused blood during the infant's surgery, doctors used drugs to stimulate his production of red blood cells, and the blood from his incisions vas recycled . The "bloodless" operation performed Feb. 7 on Aiden Michael Rush's liver was so successful, it could become routine , doctors said Wednesday.
