BY LYLE GOULDING JOURNAL STAFF VI/RITER SUUSA ~ helping residents of Cedar City rai~ money to , build a new park lbr children; one that will be both fun and educational. With the money it raises for the Park Discovery project, SUUSA plans to buy a design component within the park. The SUUSA Senate donated $1,000 toward Park Discovery and also sponsored the Colors concert that took place Feb 10. The way that Park Discovery works is members of the community volunteer their time to organize, design and build each park. Leathers and Associates, an engineering firm in New York, oversees each of these community projects. Linda Justice, a resident of Cedar City is responsible for getting Park Discovery started in the community, said Harmony Langford , a volunteer for Park Discovery. Children in the community submit ideas of what they think would be fun to have in the park. Each Park Discovery project is unique based on the ideas community members submit. The ideas are accepted based on their educational value and how much fun they will be for children playing in the park, Wilcken said. Each design component that is chosen for the park is sold to an organization or individual. The park is funded entirely by donations. A wall that will circle the entire park will feature major moments in world history and will also highlight important times in the history of Cedar City and southern Utah. The wall is the component that SUUSA would like to purchase, Wilcken said. "We don't know exactly what we will get yet,· said Sen. Jessi Allen of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. ·we are looking for something that will best represent the university.· . The community effort to build Park Discovery is "right on track" and construction is scheduled to begi,n during the first week of May, Langford said. "We will work from sun up to sun down,· Langford said. "We are hoping to get a lot of help from students at SUU."
