Show PA,E 5 UNIVERSITY JOURNAL CAMPUS NEWS !THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1001 Forensics hits paydirt Hudson-Weems addresses BY KIMBERLY SWENSON JOURNAL STAFF WRITER Students of the SUU forensics squad received several awards earlier this month at the University of Utah "Great Salt Lake" Invitational Speech and Debate tournament. Xanna Hardman, a junior political science major from Draper, Utah , finished , second in the persuasive speaking and third in the informative speaking competitions. Hardman was ranked third in the overall individual sweepstakes competition. She is qualified for the American Forensic Association national competition in these two events. Hardman is a transfer Terry West student this year from Ric s College. "She's a great addition to the squad." said Terry West. director of forensics at SUU. Ben Crosby, a senior English major from Las Vegas, added to his impressive year by finishing third in persuasive speaking , fourth in after-dinner speaking, and sixth in impromptu speaking competitions. · Crosby is also representing SUU and · Utah in the national competitions in persuasive speaking . "We have a good chance to reach the semi-finals.· West said. The Interstate Oratory Competition, the oldest irrtercollegiate speech championship tournament, will be held at Solana Community College in Solana, Calif., April 2628. The top two persuasive speaking competitors from each state are invited IQ attend . Hardman is the top qualifier and Crosby took the second qualifying spot for Utah . "We are very happy about getting both spots," West said. . The next events for the team will be a tournament Jan. 26 in El Paso, Texas, a'fld a tournam ent the same week in Modesto, Calif. Students 'who are close to qualifying for nationals and those who have already qualified will be participating in this tournament. Each competitive student will put in 10 to 20 hours preparation a week to be successful in competitions. "We take forensics seriously here ," West said. "I feel wonderful about this team.
