Show UGC represents Greek.s BY PAIGE MARIE HENDRICKSON SENIOR STAFF WRITER The United Greek Councit has been working to positively exemplify Greeks on SUU's campus since it was established a decade ago, by contri buting to the community and supporting campus activities. Melanie Featherstone, a senior communication major from Bountiful , Utah, and the UGC president, said the primary goals of the UGC are to promote the positiveness of being Greek and assist with campus activities . The UGC supports campus activities such as ta ilgate parties , Homecoming and the Halloween Howl and is looking forward to helping the SUUSA service committee with the Sub-for-Santa program this year. The UGC also participated in Relay for Life and will help ra ise money for Parents tor Park Discovery and sponsor Christmas for local famil ies through Horizon House, a substance abuse recovery center in Cedar City. Featl:lerstone said the UGC is compri sed of representatives from the . two Greek fraternities and the three Greek sororities on campus. The UGC encourages members of all Greek chapters to attend other chapters' , activities as well as SUU club activities, Featherstone said, explaining that. to many, being Greek means sisterhood and brotherhood , as well as leadership and involvement. Featherstone said the UGC also seeks to "dispel myths about Greeks in general.· Some myths include the notion that Greeks "pay· for their friends , party all the time and form cliques . Fea.therstone said the clique myth is especially hard to eliminate because sorority sisters and fratern ity brothers become close friends and naturally want to spend time together. Featherstone . explained that e chapter dues pay for featherstol'l national insurance offered to members during activities, the chapter pins members wear, and campus and,_community activities the chapter sponsors throughout the year. Even so , SUU Greeks get involved and get to know a lot of people in different areas . "Greeks on this campus are truly diverse people," she said of the fraternity and sorority members.
