Freshmen play ~ey role in football team's success BY NOAH BORTON JOURNAL SPORTS WRITER The Southern Utah football team has received production from an unlikely source this season. Several members of the 2000 freshman recruiting class have turned heads and added hope for the future of the program. Several true freshmen have earned playing time for the 'Birds. The most notable contributions are at the offensive skill positions including quarterback Charles Henderson, slot back Steve Price and receiver-Neil Mathieu. The impending graduation of quarterback Matt-Cannon creates a large hole in the lineup which will need to be filled by this recruiting class. The coaches may have found a replacement in the 6' 1• 200 pound Henderson. ·we knew he was gifted, but he had never run the option before, so we didn't know how he would react,· head coach C. Ray Gregory said. ·so, we have been pleased with how he has performed.· In preseaso_n , fellow freshman quarterback Dustin Randolf from Granger High School went down to a season ending injury. That opened the door for Henderson. The Las Vegas native has ran for 127 yards and two TDs in addition to a 53 yard TD pass to Mathieu against Ft. Lewis. The adjustment from high school to college football is not seamless however. "They try to run right through you instead of just tackling you," Henderson said. "It is more technical; there is more work than play," Price said. Price had addition difficulties. He was recruited out of Cimarron High School in Las Vegas as a cornerback, but when he arrived the coaches moved him to slot. "It was hard because I had never played offense before. I had to get used to begin hit rather than hitting people," he said. Price has adjusted well; in five games he has 94 yards rushing and a touchdown. As his knowledge increases each week so does his playing time. Even though most of the time these freshmen spend on the field is at the end of blowouts, Gregory said he believes it will show dividends. • "I think it will be awesome. I think every snap they get now will help them in the future,· he said. · The freshman class of 2000 is also optimistic towards.their future at SUU. "Our class is so close. We are from all over, and we are all hungry for it. We are going to be ready,· said Price. ·we are going to try to take how the seniors do it and we are going to try to keep SUU with a winning record," Henderson added. As for now the freshmen will continue to chip in while they can all the while watching the likes of Cl~y Denton and Cannon as they prepare to be the next stars at SUU.
