Show UNIVERSITY JOURNAL CAMPUS NEWS PAGE4 BT days on the way BY KIRSTEN TATE SENIOR STAFF WRITER Career Windows 2000, the theme of the College of Business and Technology's annual focus days, is Oct. 17 through 19. The focus days are held to spotlight the college and to give busin~ss ~nd technology students an opportunity to become more familiar with the college they belong to. The theme of Career Windows 2000 was chosen because there Will be a focus on finding careers, preparation and planning. · we wanted to help other students understand their own field, to understand what is out there career wise and to know the professors and other students," said Stephen Lisonbee, a senior business management major from Delta, Utah, and a BT senator. To kick off the focus days, a Meet and Eat will be held tomorrow at 6 p.m. in the Starlight Room of the Sharwan Smith Center. From 6 to 6:30, a panel of clubs and department heads will introduce themselves to students. Then from 6:30 to 7:15 a dinner will be served so students can mingle and interact with the professors and other students. Following the dinner, workshops will be held for students and professors. The workshops will be 1/2 OFF FIRST MONTHS RENT! taught by companies attending the Career Fair on Wednesday and focus on marketing yourself, electronic resumes and problem solving . · 1am really excited . It is a big change from previous years, but I think it will be a good thing,· said Lisonbee. The Career Fair is Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Ballroom. It is an opportunity for everyone to come and see what careers are available. "It is also a good opportunity for students to get internships and for companies to meet studE:nts, • said Jessi Allen, a senior communication major from South Jor.d an, Utah, and a BT senator. During the Career Fair, there will also be a club rush in the main hallway of the Sharwan Smith Center for the clubs in the business and technology departments to recruit students. Thursday a business and technology social will be on the lower quad from noon to 2 p.m. Professors and students will have music, snow cones and volleyball games for everyone. · "It is to spotlight the business and technology talent," said Allen . "This·week will serve as an opportunity for students to build resumes , practice interview skills and bring the college together,· Lisonbee said. ~ MONDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2000 State of University address to focus on student issues .Student issues and concerns will be addressed at the State of the University Address, today at 2 p.m. in the Starlight Room of the Sharwan Smith Center. The purpose of the address is to fulfill one of the student government objectives of increasing communication between students and administration. "Students can go and talk to the administration at any time, but we feel it shows extra effort to go to the students,• said Mike Wasden, a senior communication major from Boise, Idaho, and student body president. ·we want to communicate and we want feed back. We are accountable to the student body at large; · Mic/Jae; they elected us and we Wasden need to be accountable to them ," he added. Other objectives of the student government and how they will be accomplished will be discussed. One objective is voter registration. The Rock the Vote campaign and voter registration drive are two of the ways students are being encouraged to vote and make a difference. A moderator will administer the questions to members of the executive council, Matt Cannon of the judicial council and Mindy Benson, director of student activities. Some of the issues concerning students may include edited movies, a tuition increase, student fees, access to Senate, activities or any other question students want answered. · 1think that students want to just make it through college and have a good experience," said Wasden. "They just want to have a quality education with a degree that will apply when they go for a job. We are here to make sure the students are represented fairly on issues so they can enjoy their colleg.e experience. · Students are encouraged to attend the one-hour meeting. "They elected us and need to keep us accountable," said Wasden. "If they have concerns and support other concerns, they need to be there. It is a good opportunity for student government to gain perspectives of what the students think and feel, a'nd vice versa.
