The search for a coach will begin near the end of October and Berg said she hopes the new coach will start as the semester begins in January. That way there will be time for recruiting and finishing the schedule. The recruiting area will be Utah. Nevada and Idaho. The budget will be in place for the team by fall 2001 . There will be six grants and aids to be divided between whichever players the coach decides will deserve ~em. · Currently there is a women's soccer club on campus that plays clubs from other schools. According to Berg, some of the players might have interest to play on the team . She said that if they meet the NCAA requirements and have good enough skills, they might be able to walk on the team. During its NCAA certification review in 1996, SUU committed to adding a women's sport by the fall of 2001 . After extensive discussion, the University's Athletic Council recommended that the additional sport be soccer. The recommendation has received the support of the school's administration and the Board of Trustees. Every school with a football team faces the problem of having equal number of men and women athletes. Wrth the addition of women's soccer, SUU is ge~ing closer. Next fall, there will be a new team for SUU fans to cheer for; a soccer team. As part of SUU's ongoing effort to increase the number of opportunities for female athletes at the institution, the school announced that it will add women's soccer in the fall of 2001 . The team will compete in the MidContinent Conference playing six conference games on the road and four at home: The rest of the season will include playing schools in the region, although the schedule isn't set yet. Home games are tentatively set to be played in Eccles Coliseum. Other choices could be the football practice field or the area between the baseball and softball diamonds. Both areas need to be measured to see if they could accommodate a soccer field. The games will most likely be played on Thursdays and Saturdays. "Our goal is to be competitive,· said SUU Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman's Administrator Kathryn Berg. "Soccer is highly competitive in the Mid-Con."
