Show IMONDAY,·JULY 10, 2000 UNIVERSITY JOURNAL ARTS · Colcannon next up on Concert Series A blend of traditional Celtic music and . contemporary original tunes with a deep Irish flavor is the promise of a July 16 performance by Colcannon on the Summer Evening Concert Series sponsored by Southern Utah University. The five-member ensemble, which performs out of Denver, will present its free concert at 7 p.m. in the Randall L. Jones Theatre. The general public is invited to attend. "Colcannon has been performing together for over a decade,· Marla Bingham, director of the concert series for SUU's School of Continuing and Professional Studies, said. "During that time they have evolved from a selfdescribed beermugs-banging-ontables pub band to what they call a 'quirky, often introspective, performing unit.·· Colcannon has released four albums for Oxford Road Records. It has also been featured in an hour long concert video, Co/cannon "Colcannon in Concert," that was presented as a Public Broadcasting Service television special. Vocalist for the five piece band is Mick Bolger, who sings in both English and his native Irish (Gaelic) language. He also performs as percussionist, playing the Bodhran, the Irish goatskin drum. Other band members are Rod Garnett; flutist, performing on multiple wooden flutes, many of which are reproductions of 18th century instruments; Mike Fitzmaurice, double bass and guitar; Jean Harrison, fiddle and accordion; and Brian Mullins, guitar, mandolin, mandocello, bouzouki, and flute. - - - - - - - - . "Colcannon draws on the diverse personal and musical backgrounds of its members to present what they describe as 'new acoustical Celtic folk music,'" Bingham explains. "They have their own unique, recognizable, and contemporary style. It's a band that attempts to speak to its audiences in a way that is both contemporary and timeless." Colcannon will also present a 1 p.m. performance July 16 at the Iron County Nursing Home in Parowan. The band is being co-sponsored by the Utah Arts Council as part of its performing arts tour. "VVherever the band performs, it has a goal of providing an intense, moving, intimate and fun concert experience,• Bingham said. SQDTHWEST ~ (~ 5Tans for S15 (Reg. only) In a·Hurry?
