Show .. !MONDAY, JULY 10, 2000 UNIVERSITY JOURNAL SPORTS PAGES 'Birds add game, coach SUU has added Corey Russell to its football staff. Russell, a 1997 graduate of Texas A&M-Commerce, will work primarily with receivers and special teams. He replaces Tyler Anderson, who resigned from the staff last winter to take the head coaching position at Tooele High School. A native of Ft. Worth, Texas, Russell · competed collegiately at Norfolk State University, where he was an allconference return specialist and also played wide receiver, catching 17 career touchdown passes and returning three kickoffs and six punts for touchdowns in a single season. This will be Russell's third stop as a coach, including two seasons as a studentassistant at Texas A&M. Last year he was wide receivers coach at Sul Ross University. "We're happy to have Corey on the staff," SUU Head Football Coach C. Ray Gregory said. "He's a young guy with a lot of energy who has had some good experience with some successful programs. He played in a very successful passing offense at Norfolk and we hope he can help us add some flair to our routes and generally improve our passing game." Also, SUU has added a road game at Hampton University, Sept. 23, finalizing the 2000 football schedule. Hampton, a IAA institution located in Hampton, Va., finished third in the Mid-Eastern Athletic \I A ;\ \\' A S \I I:: A \: T Conference last year at 5-3, 7-4 overall, after representing the MEAC in the 1998 I-AA playoffs. For the second year in a row the Thunderbirds were forced to scramble to find opponents, this year after a pair of teams, Weber State and Southwest Texas State, exercised options in their contracts to play at SUU in 2001 rather than 2000. The result both years has been a late addition to the schedule. "We're just glad to finally have an 11-game schedule," SUU Head Coach C. Ray Gregory said. "[Hampton seems] to have the same problem we have, getting teams to come in there and play them. This will be good for us though, we'll get some exposure on the east coast and it's great for me because we've got a game · in my home state of Virginia." Southern Utah opens the 2000 season at home against Ft. Lewis, Sept. 2, then goes on the road for three straight-at Utah State, at San Jose State and at Hampton-before returning to Eccles Coliseum for Homecoming, Sept. 30, vs. Cal Poly. SUU plays at UC Davis, 0.ct. 14, and at Idaho State, Oct. 21 , before a threegame home-stand against St. Mary's (Oct. 28), Rocky Mountain (Nov. 4) and Morehead State (Nov. 11 ). The Thunderbirds close the regular season at Northern Arizona, Nov. 18.
