Show !MONDAY, JULY 3, 1000 PAGES ., UNIVERSITY JOURNAL SPORTS Tvvo athletes are honored Southern Utah's Jody Benson and Dave Laughton have been selected to this year's Spring University Division GTE Academic All-District VIII team as selected by CoSIDA. Benson, a senior distance runner on the Thunderbird indoor and outdoor track and field squads, posted the MidContinent Conference's best time in the 10,000-m and also won both the 10,000m and 5,000-m at the conference's outdoor meet. The physical education major from Payson is also a two-time MidCon cross country runner of the year. Benson was also a second team selection to the Fall/Winter GTE At-Large squad after posting a cumulative 3.393 GPA. Laughton, a senior golfer from Ogden , had three top-10 and two top-five finishes this year, including a fourth-place finish at the Mid-Con championship. He was theThunderbirds' top finisher three times and was the conference's player of the year in 1999 after claiming medalist honors at the league tournament. this is also Laughton's second all-District selection, following last year's appearance on the first team. Laughton carrjed a cumulative GPA of 3.50. The team is selected by voting among members of the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in the district, which is comprised of schools in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and British · Columbia. Wyatt wins javelin at Junior Nationals Southern Utah University's Brad Wyatt claimed the individual championship in the javelin June 24 at the USA Junior National meet, being held in Denton, Texas. Going into the finals, Wyatt, a freshman, from Dugway, Utah, was in fourth place, but he recorded a personal-best mark of 204-1 in the medal round to claim the championship and earn a spot on the US Junior National Team. He will now represent the United States in the North American meet and has a chance to advance to the World Junior Championships with a top-three \ I .\ '\ \ \ ·\ ~ \ I L ·\ '\ T finish at the North American Championships. "This is a great accomplishment for ·Brad,· SUU track and field Coach Eric Houle said. "To win the junior national meet is huge and I really think he has a great chance to go on to compete at the world meet. It's athletes like this, coming up big in meets like this, who are putting our program on the map." Wyatt is the first Southern Utah athlete to earn a spot on the US Junior National track and field squad.
