Sunday eve A young German string trio which was formed only six years ago but which is rapidly gaining international attention will perform July 9 in the SUU Summer Evening Concert Series. The Jacques Thibaud String Trio will present the 7 p.m. program in the Randall L. Jones Theatre. Each of the Summer Evening Concert Series presentation~ if free to the general public. "The trio is nearly unique among today's chamber ensembles because its members play 'by heart;' they play without printed music; everything is memorized." Marla Binghi,im, coordinator of the music series for SUU's School of Continuing and Professional Studies, said. "Critics agree that it takes great dedication and an extreme sensitivity to each of the other musicians to perform strictly from memory." · Consisting of Burkhard Maiss, violin; Philip Douvier, viola; and Uwe Hirth Schmidt, cello, the trio began working together as students at the Berlin School of Art in 1994. None of the members is yet 30 years old. Early successes encouraged the trio to continue to perform together. In six years, the Jacques Thibaud String Trio has performed extensively in Europe, Japan, and the United States. Their first U.S. tour came in 1997. They completed another month-long tour of North America during the winter of 1999. The trio has captured first prize in the international Folkwang/Essen competition in Germany and has been a prize winner in other interna~onal chamber music competitions at Bonn, Essen, and Weimar Germany; Milhouse, France; and Florence, Trapani, and Caltanisetta, Italy. The name of the trio pays homage to Jacques Thibaud, an acclaimed French violinist who died at age 72 in a 1953 plane crash on the way to a concert he was to perform. The Cedar City performance will include works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, WA. Mozart, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Ernst von Dohnanyi. Upcoming presentations in the series: July 16-Colcannon, a five-member ensemble which performs new acoustic Celtic folk music. July 23-Abo Addy and Kukrudu, presenting the polyrhymic sound of African highlife. July 30-Tingstad & Rumbel, a duo combining a single guitar with woodwind. August 6-Robin & Linda Williams & Their Fine Group, presents contemporary-acoustic music, bluegrass, and old time country. August 13-Balfa Toujours, an ensemble offering "the essence and heart of Cajun music.· "We think our program for 2000 will carry on what has become a wonderful tradition of fine musical offerings," said Bingham. "We have always tried to present music that appeals to different tastes. Again this summer we have several widely diverse offerings.· -.. Nicole Erickson. a sophomore art major from Layton. Utah, paints toys with new freshmen during service learning for the Happy Factory, an organization that delivers toys to Native American children living on reservations in the Four Comers region.
