Tiana Tew (Humanities and Social Sciences) regarding Bill #032-00, a request for $6,000 to build a ropes course, which was passed by the SUUSA Senate Tuesday night. "This is something that every single one of you want. I hope you will tap into that desire," said Sen. Nicole Bingham (Business, Technology and Communication). The bill passed 12-1-2. In other new business, Bill #033-00 requested the allocation of $2,000 to fund two buses for the SUU Concert Choir to travel to Salt Lake City and perform at area high schools. The trip is scheduled for April 10. Sen. Natalie Richardson (Science) said the trip is fully academic and there is opportunity for recruitment. Sen. Stephanie Kukic (HSS) said because SUU is considered to be a liberal arts college, the senate needs to support the arts. The bill passed 14-0-1 . Bill #034-00 requested $500 to aid a research project on toads. The possibility of being published in the Journal of Herpetology "is a tremendous accomplishment and opportunity for these students," said Bingham. The bill passed 15-0-0. Bill #035-00, which requested $600 to reward the top three clubs on campus, was removed from the senate. Sen. Brad Labrum (Science) said an alternate solution had been found. Debate arose regarding Bill #036-00, a request for $200 to fund a dosing social for the students in the College of Education, scheduled for April 19. Sen. Cody Wilson (Science) said it was an opportunity for the education senators-elect to meet _ the students and "hit the ground running.· . Sen. Steve Nelson (Education) said the social was · a good way to formulate ideas and present them to the dean jn a non-threatening way. Sen. Mike Wankier (BTC) suggested the social could be arranged more economically, such as having an open forum. Steve Nelson said the dean was not in favor of an open forum and there was no point in voicing co·ncerns without administration present. The bill passed 10-3-2. In new business, two bills were introduced. Bill #037-00 requested $7,515 to purchase three coin-operated copy machines to be placed in various locations around campus. However, the amount was amended to $5,010 to buy two machines, due to the lack of funds remaining in the senate account. The copy machines will be placed in the Centrum Arena computer lab and the Braithwaite Liberal Arts Center writing lab. Sen. Bruce Louthan (HSS) said students can't waste time making copies and the copy machines would be available during lab hours. Bill #038-00 requested $2,800 to the television dub and communication department to purchase a microwave dish that would allow live broadcasting around Cedar City in a two-mile range. Sen. Kari Ann Sewell-Young (BTC) said SUTV enhances academic standards and unites students. The two bills will be cirded and posted for one week. The senate also began debate on line items, the amount of money each club or organization will receive next year. Final decisions will not be made for several weeks.
