According to Julie Clawson, SUUSA's elections director, the voter turnout was high, with 21 percent of the school's students turning in ballots. "We were really happy with the voter turnout. Normally, you're lucky if you get 10 to 15 percent. We were really happy with 21. but we'd like to see a lot more for generals,· Clawson said. Clawson seemed unaware that past SUUSA elections have drawn as much as 28 percent of the registered voters and that 21 percent is close to the average of the past decade. last year, with only one party running, only 971 students showed up to vote for the primaries. This year, 1,001 people voted. The general elections will be held March 8 at the Sharwan Smith Center Living Room . Students wishing to vote will be required to show their student The results of yesterday's primary elections featured several close vote counts and the Legos party racking up the most candidates to advance to Wednesday's general election. Legos had 16 candidates survive the primary, while TNT had 11 and Focus had nine. For the SUUSA presidential seat, Legos' Cody Wilson with 382 votes, and TNT's Michael Wasden with 368 votes cut out Focus' Jeremy Walker, who received 234 votes. Sara England, of the Legos party, led the primary vote for activities vice president by a large margin with 405 votes, as TNT's JaNae Hatch tallied 297. Focus· Ryan Richey was eliminated with 270. In the race for academic vice president. the finalists are Stephen Nelson of Legos, who received 386 votes, and Stephanie Kukic of Focus, who tallied 309. Travis Christy of TNT was third with 285 votes. The College of Education senators ran a close race; all of the candidates finished within nine votes of each other. The Performing and Visual Arts senators ran an even closer race as the top three candidates were separated by one vote as Jennifer Powell captured 46 votes and Amanda Matthews and Kyle Vincent. both of the Focus Party, each received 45 votes. All of the senatorial finalists· from this college finished within five votes of each other. Legos had the most straight party votes with 126. "I'm ~o happy. It feels really good because this was the choice of the SUU students," Wasden said. Other candidates were not as excited about yesterday's results. The senators' platforms will be presented in the Ballroom of the Sharwan Smith Center at 6 p.m. this evening, followed by a candidate debate. The debate will be broadcast live on SUTV. "I think [the students] need to vote because these are the people who represent their interests. It's really important to vote if you care at all about student activities and how it's run,· Clawson said. In years past, .., candidates had the i option of switching parties for general ~elections.
