Show !TUESDAY, JUNE 1, 1999 UNIVERSITY JOURNAL SPORTS SU hurler has scouts' attention SUU pitcher Nick Roberts has bee_n ranked as the number-one amateur prospect in the state of Utah going into this week's Major League Baseball First-Year Player draft, according to Baseball America Magazine. Roberts (6· 1, 190, RHP; Annabella, Utah/Dixie JC) was 10-14 in two seasons as a Thunderbird, with a 7 .30 ERA and 168 strikeouts - second-best strikeout total in school history - in 178 2/3 innings. This past season, Roberts was 3-7 with a 6.52 ERA in 89.2 innings. His biggest win of his career came in a 10-6 upset victory at national power Arizona April 24, giving the Thunderbirds their second victory against the Wildcats and first-ever series win over a PAC-10 school. Roberts used his 90+ mph fastball and a sharp slider to shatter his single-season strikeout record with 91 this year. He recorded 77 punchouts to set the mark a year ago. His ability to throw strikes and change speeds has caught the attention of many scouts who project Roberts to be taken early in the upcoming draft, held June 2-4, in New York City. SUU 's baseball program has had two players taken in the top-10 rounds of the draft. Former catcher Mike Ryser was the highest pick ever in SUU history, taken in the sixth round by the Oakland Athletics in 1987. n 1996, RHP/OF Ryan Jensen was taken in the eighth round by the San Francisco Giants. Jensen is currently pitching for the Fresno Grizzlies, the Giants' AAA affiliate. He has a 5-2 record, with a 4.22 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 49.0 innings. If called up, Jensen will become the first Thunderbird ever to play at the major-league level.
