THE UNNERSITY JOURNAL· SOUTHERN UTAH UNIVERSITY · MONDAY, APRIL 26, 1999 Student art is featured at Braithwaite exhibits Art work by SUU tudents will be featured in two separate exhibits which will run through May 8 at the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery on camp~. A collection of senior portfolios by nine graduating SUU art majors will compri e one exhibit. The seniors will each be showing between cight and 20 works, according to Lydia Johnson, director of the gallery. rudents exhibiting works include Brandon Bevan, Ashley Cartwright, Chad Hardin, Cynthia Hathaway, Heather Heywood, Stephen Heywood, Yoon Lee, Marty Lunt, and Adam Moore. The econd exhibit includes a wide . variety of pieces selected from a campuswide fine art competition. Entries were adjudicated by Joe Miller, an an faculty member from Buffalo State College in New York State. Any currently registered UU student was eligible to enter the competition, which was not restricted to art major or minors. Categories in the competition indude painting, ceramic , photography, printmaking, culpture, mixed media, drawing, and illustration. Braithwaite Gallery hours are from noon to 7 p .m. each week day. The two exhibits are free and open to the general public. Brass ensemble to play American piritual and medleys of music made popular by Henry Mancini and the Beatles will be intermingled with more cla sical compositions at Wcdne day's concert by UU's Bra s Ensemble. The 7:30 p .m. concert will be held in the Thorley Recital Hall of the U Music Building. There i no charge. Mu ic by Italian Giovanni GabtieB, German Johann ebastian Bach, and Russfan Rimsky-Korsakov will he included alongside uch number as the spiritual "Swing Low weet Chariot;" "Hey Jude," written by Paul McCartney for John Lennon 's on Julian and made popular by the Beatie ; and "Peter Gunn," a popular Henry Mancini number. "We have a wonderfully fun mixture of music," James Williamson, ensemble director aid. "It is fun to perform, and that enjoyment will, hopefully, pill over to our audience."
