Show ~0 TIT8IJE ~OOWlU§ Annual cystic fibrosis walk set for Saturday By CAMI PERKINS JOURNAL STAFF WRITER On aturday, April 24, the fight to find a cure for cystic fibrosis will move forward as hundreds of citie around the 11 .. participate in "Great Stride , ' a walk to cure cystic fibrosis. Cy tic fibro i (CF) is the number-one genetic killer of children and young adults in this country. Approximately 30,000 people in the nited tates have CF. A defective gene causes the body to produce an abnonnally thick, ticky mucu . This abnormal mucus leads to chronk and fatal lung infections and impairs digestion . Currently, there i no cure. Scienti ts upported by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation are writing a remarkable medical success cory. CF researchers are quickly translating what they learn about the F gene and CF cell in the laboratory into promising new treatments. Based on their succes , landmark gene therapy studies and clinical trial on new drug treatments are now under way. Great Strides, now in its 10th year in Cedar City, is a one-day nationwide walk dedicated to rai ing funds to suppon cystic fibrosis patient care and research. The walk in Cedar City will start from the U Administration Building at 10 a.m. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Pre ident teven D. Bennion is the honorary chair of this year's walk and said that this annual drive is a major effort that give everyone the opportunity to give support to a very worthy cause. He said he feels that we are lucky to live in an age with so many medical breakthroughs and perhaps a cure for cystic fibrosis. Bennion also said he would like to salute Bud Bowman and others who contribute to this cause every year. Individuals intere ted in participating in Great trides can call DeMar "Bud" Bowman at 586-8174. Those who can't participate in the aturday festivities are welcome to make a contribution payable to the Cystic Fibro is Foundation to sponsor one of the patients.
