We are also charged, as a part of a community of learners, with affording opportunitie for success in students' per onal and profession al lives by providing ervice and leadership excellence. Thus stated, we must challenge our students to become more intelligent, more rational and analytical thinkers, and push them to excel beyond the limitations of previou educational institutions, such as high school. If there is a problem with grade inflation , then we need not imply justify ou r lack of concern with it. instead, we need to combat it by grading fairly , and by maintaining high academic standards. Grade inflation occurs. It has probably always occurred , and until the educational ystem finds a better method of evaluation , it will mo t likely continue in various forms . Yet, to echo Provost Reutzel , wh.en referring to cour e work, one ought not to receive an " A" simply for completing the assigned work, but both st udent and teacher must a k whether or not that work is of outstanding quality. We must also remember that our own General Catalog tells us that a " C" is average work, and is satisfactory. No ma tt.er how intelligent students are, there is still much to learn, to explore and to experience through course work, i.e. our classes. This also goes for the f.acuJty and adminl nation. Otherwise, our classroom teaching becomes mendacious. The students at SUU are excellent and deserve that recognition. However, only through discipline·, hard work and a willingness to learn will academic and social success be achieved. Not, I think, simply by being admitted to the university with a high grade point average. 24 Multl-traclf Digital Recording • Bands • Instrumentalists • Mobile Recording • loncerts/lledtals • Tape to CD Transfers • CD Transfers and Duplication • Printed Music Notation • Digital Mastering and Editing ! 1, !{ • l , 1, l ( \ I I c, , , 1 h I , ''TIAA-CREF sets the I \ I<. t re Ing ~ II < , , ,, \I l ' I I \ "Am. ·•· enca's standard in the fin~ncial services industry!'
