Only one cud nt spoke out in o pposition to a resolution that aimed to trike th su-.iight-party vo te off hallots ch· year, Resolution #007- 99. That student, Kristian 01 en, a ' UU A presidential candidate for next year, aid, "The party sy tem i wbat need.s to he changed, not the straight-party.vote." He later added, "lfyou take away the straight-party vote, it will hurt those who have played by the rule ." A sole student spoke in favor of the re olution as well during the open forum portion of the meeting. Sen. Ken Shocll (SCI), "was urprised with the passion that was shown last week ahout the resolution," hut that this week only two students showed to discuss their opinions. During senate debate of the resolution, Sen. Sam Johnson (EDUC), said "I agree that reform needs to he made, hut thi is not the area or time though. " Sen. JlL'-tin McEwen (H. S) di agreed, "lf we choo e not to remove the str.tight party vote this ye-.tr, that one candidate who put him elf through the rules will be at an extreme disadvantage." Debate on the resolution qui kly ended. Senators voted to take a five-minute caucu , and then immediately called the re olution to question . Because of election hy-law , Wilk y explained to enators that three-quarters of senators' votes were needed, o r12 votes, for the resolution tO pass. Wilke y said that Julie Oakford, ic lson 's predecessor, will he finished with her s tudent tea ching within the next week. "The only thing keeping her in Cedar City is tudent government," he aid. In addition , unanimou voting hy senator cleared two other hills with little debate. Bill #037-99 allocated $300 to the Pi Sigma Alpha honor ociety for an honorarium ofj.O. Williams, Ph.D., and·Bm #038-99 apportioned $610 for the purcha e of additional hike racks. SUUSA President Treion Muller and Shan Davi , presidential committee chairman, will contribute additional funds ror a total of three bike racks. Five hills will be po ted outside or SUUSA offices for -student evaluation. Bill #039-99 requested up to $900 for the remodeling of a di play case that house the Pestalozzi award. The award is the highe c form of recognition for the College of Education , according to John on.
