Y2K has developed into the huz-z-word of the 1990s as people worry ahout computers blitzing as the clock strikesJan . 1, 2000. As the world prepares for what prohlems may loom ahead, questions ari e as to how SUU is prepared for such di 'asters, whether naturaJ or maninduced. Brent Johnson is SUU 's safety and risk manager. He said that the preparation plans for uch disasters and emergencies are undergoing changes as the old plan i now ohsolece. The new plans will he introduced within the next three weeks to the presidential council for a final review, Johnson said. The plans vary from one disaster to another, hut all are designed to increa e ord rand decrease panic in emergency ituation . uch plan include emergency evacuation in the event of certain disasters and assign the Centrum as the main as mhly area for others. Also proposed in the plans is a 72-hour supply of food for students conducted by SUU Food Services, although it is not yet clear whether this would include all students or only those with meal plans. [n addition to natural disasters, UU developed a contingency plan for possible Y2K problems. "Our main concern i electricity," Johnson said. "Each building has to be handled differently." Loss of power solutions vary from structure to structure as does wiring and heating. He said that utility companies have aid that Y2K may bring an interference to power that could last around two to three days. He added that no one will know precisely all that will happen untiJ the clock strike 12.
