Show TIIE IVERSITY JOURNAL : ., 0 THERN lITAH L s 'Bodies as toys' questioned I read lhe article by Ray Dunbar last eme.ster and just had co read the one by Mau Bennett. 1 thought I might g t a kick out of some 19-ycar-old's smug tirade on sexuality. When 1 read it, though he came aero a an adult who i rightfuHy concerned, even a ,little angry at being unfairly weed by the tare for condom . If · data i correct and they do co t $1 pe r piece, the ACLU ought to be looking into this. " in tax "? What is that upposed to mean? Is it a real legal term? It sounds like one of those old laws left over from the 19th Century like the one that all "horseless carriages" must be Lied co a hitching rail. As I read Mr. Dunbar' article I noticed several instance in which he either misread Mr. Bennett ' s a rticle or mi under tood it completely. Mr. Bennett did not ay he was using women as "objects for his personal entertainment ." He referred to him elf as " exually active" hue there is no reason to assume Mr. Bennett was exually active with any women he wa not involved in some deeper relationship with. As to taking privilege without giving commitment, I really think the who.le analy is wa mi guided. The idea of women saying they are willing to please Mr. Bennett " in a de perate attempt a t forming some son of permanent relationship with him" is ab urd. In fact , it might ugge t that women are somehow devoid of sexual drive , dysfunctional and calculating. I can assure aJJ from simple ob ervation of human behavio r that this is not the case. Mr. Dunbar goe on to suggest that Mr. Bennett is ignorant of those who abstain from sex due to personal sense of honor. I abstain simply because I haven't managed to find a woman w ho seemed sensitive enough to do so out of concern for tradition. It was al o said that Mi:. Bennett called into que.stion the piece of paper that represents legal marriage. If you look at the context, the piece of pap r is a colJege degree, not a marriage certificate. But since he did not, I will. tate documents that say I am married to this or that woman are of little concern to me beyond matter of medical insurance, retirement or perhap remembering her in my will. I also sincerely doubt the tate thinks mu h more of them either . They ·are likely to be viewed imply as a tool for monitoring the activities of the vast population governed. A the concept of marriage (as our ociety recognjzes it) , I find it rather offensive . For instance, according to Webster's Dictionary, the tenn "husband" i a verb , and it mean "to manage carefu ll y." It i al o connected with tenn uch a animal or p lant hu hand ry. I must point out that one thing ce rtainly more revolting than ecing a person as an object, is to have the sheer gall co see a living, thinking human being as a possession. AJso , why would I want to have my wife take my last name? What i wrong with the name she has? I mine supposed to be somehow better? Or perhaps it is meant in the ame context as writing your name in a of a jacket or a text hook. By these law , the late not only how an apalling lack of concern fo r the civil rights of my mate, but also for my own civil rights, in that the law inadvertantly attempts to coe rce me into a contract I find mo rall y repugnant. I really think it is time legal mi n d sough t to im p leme n t law that allow individuals to leave their estates · o r their retirement or sha re thei r medical insu rance with whichever person is named by the individual. Enough of the oaths and weird costumes! If it doesn't work out, people will imp ly seek an expensive divorce that ties up the co urt system anyway. If two people are compatible, they will cay together. II they are not, they will sep arate, and all oath.s and weird ly decorated cakes and biza r re costum~s one could imagine will not change that.
