Show Students lack interest (conti nued fro m page 1) something to be concerned about? · Political apathy is not unjque to students of southern Utah. According to a report in Time magazine, in t he p ast five years, college studehts nationwide have expressed less interest in politics than ever before. The report attributed the sensationalist aspects of Starr's investigation to its p opularity among students. Th e keyhole-peeking aspect evokes more in terest and p ublic opinion than issues like health care reform. Though students may he less • politically active than other sectors of society, their opinions on Clinton are reflective of the nation's somewhat positive o utlook on the president despite the current scandal. The president's approval rating among SUU students remains relatively high with 63 p ercent of poll respondents approving of Clinto n's job performance. Like the rest of t he nation, students are d ivided on w hether or not the president should be impeach ed, with 44 percent favoring his removal from office, 5 l percent opposing it and 7 percent unsure . Renters failed to clean up after themselves , and there was no one to maintain the building or grounds . In 1988, Associate Provost and dean of Continuing Education Phillip Caner headed the Cabin Co"mmi ttee and in itiated major renovations. Carte r secured donated labor, materials and funds. He also helped with the new design . While t he general p lan was fi n ished one year later, improvements continue as needed. A caretaker has been hired and administ ration of the center has been taken over by thl'. university. It is a self-supporting faci lity run by the Offi ce of Conference Services. The c urrent caretake r, Bud Garfi eld, is p resent during check-in and checkout and provides general maintenance. Since the initiation o f cleaning deposits, Garfield said "t here 's not a lot of p roblems. Usually they just do dam ned well clean ing up . This summer he installed new gas grills and new tables in one of the pavilions. Plans arc un der way to add a downstairs bedroom and an upstai rs bath room . According to Garfield, many suggestions come from visitors when they fi ll out a commen t card at the end of their stay at t he Mountain Center.
