The men and women stan their stretching routines while exchanging banter with each other like a group of best friends. They are best friends according to Zak James, a sophomore from O rem. "I love my teammates," James said. · Nobody has to do the work on their own, everybody goes out together." During the next two weeks, the team will have more work than usual. The 'Birds plan to use their time off to step up the teams training, said Head Coach Eric Houle. He said that the team will be overloaded during the next two weeks worth of practice in preparation for the Arizona Sute Invitational in Tucson, Ariz. "We have a great group of people that want to train and want to succeed," said Houle. "This is the best team we've ever had. When you look at them you are seeing potential All-Americans and conference champions." Wendy Allen, a sophomore from Orem, said that it's important to keep working hard during the break from competition. "I think it's a really good recovery week for us, but we have to dig down and really put a lot of effort in with conference finals less than a month away," said AJJen. "lt's important not to slack off this week." "We do a lot of stuff to build strength and endurance in order to get the body USC to the pace," said James. The team runs about two hours a day, six days a week, and so far the practice has paid off, according to Houle. "When you have three men who have a faster time than your very best man did last year, that speaks well for your athJetes, • said Houle. At their last competition, the Stanford University Invitational, the men's team finished seventh , and the women finished 13th. Allen ran a new personal best time at the race. "Cross country is a spon that is all about bettering yourself, and your time. The team is excited for anyone who betters their own score,• said Houle. "The best pan of running in Hawaii was looking back and seeing the whole team right behind me. It was indescribable.• AJten took first place individwJly at Hawaii, on Sept. 26, and the women's team took first place, sweeping five of the top six positions.
