Show Americana folk singers perform here Sunday A musician/songwriter noted for·her songs based on actual events will perfonn Sunday in suu·s Summer Evening Concert Series. Kate Macleod, who is steadily moving fro m a regional to a national reputatio n as a song writer, will be featured in a free 7 p.m. perfonnance in tbe Randall L. Jones Theatre. The program will include a blend of original and traditional songs. Kate Macleod, according to national radio stations is "as good as they get. " "Ms. Macleod writes and performs a wide range of song styles, bm she has gained particular attention for music written about historical happenings," Marla Bingham, director of the concert series for the SUU office of lectures/ special projects, explains. "For example, one number she has written is 'Angels on my Mind,' w hich was inspired by the Wilberg mine disaster in central Utah." "Macleod has a trne talent for summarizing a story and expressing human emotion, · says Bingham. "She is a veteran of acousitc music in the style of Celtic, bluegrass. and folk However. she still maintains her strong classical training, " says Bingham. Traditional songs from North America and the British Isles are in the repertoire of Macleod and her two accompanists, Mark Hazel and Barry Carter. Hazel plays rhythm guitar and is a vocalist. Carter perfonns on the acoustic bass guitar and provides percussion. MacLeod's background is acoustic music in the styles of old-time stringband, Celtic, bluegrass, and folk . Together they create a richly blended trio of American roots and musical vision, and intelligent blend of original and traditional songs. She is stylistically proficient on the guitar, fiddle, and hannonica. She has perfom1ed at . festivals and concerts throughout the country, including children's concerts, and has lead instrnmental workshops and song writing seminars. Macleod was born and raised on the outskirts of Washington D.C. She has acquired a strong classical music traini.ng which she believes has been of great value to her in her work. She has lived in Utah for more than 10 years and calls the West her home. "Her music is often described as . contemporary in the folk tradition,• Bingham said. "She bridges the gap between traditional music and today's singer/ songwriter. Many categorize her as Americana/folk.• The Macleod trio wiJJ also present a Utah Performing Arts Tour outreach program Aug. 9 at the Iron Country Rest Home in Parowan.
