The Mailman recovered from a sub-par performance in Game 3 to score 34 points and lead t he Utah Jazz to an 82-73 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in the fourth game of their Western Conference semifinal series last night. Utah holds a 3-1 lead in the best-of-7 series, which returns to Salt Lake City for Game 5 tomorrow. Malone, after shooting 6-for-21 on Saturday, was l 7-for-28 from the fie ld Sunday. He didn't attempt a free throw the entire game. The Jazz fended off a late comeback attempt by t he Spurs, thanks mostly to Malone. T he Spurs cut Utah's lead to 7572 on a tip-in by Tim Duncan with 2:53 left in the game. Greg Ostertag responded with two free throws to give the Jazz a 77 72 edge with 2:34 left. Duncan had a chance to move the Spurs to within three points after a foul by Antoine Carr, but he missed one of two free throws with 1:07 remaining, leaving the Spurs trailing 77-73. Malone followed up with a 14-foot jumper to give the Jazz a 79-73 advantage. The Spurs didn't score again. If necessary, Game 6 is in San Antonio Thursday, and a Game 7 would be back in Salt Lake City Saturday. In New York, the Pacers' Reggie Miller tormented the Knicks one more EARN $15,000-$25,000 THIS SUMMER! time yesterday, making a game-tying 3pointer with 5.1 seconds left in regulation and a finishing touch 3pointer with 1:28 left in overtime as Indiana took a 3-1 second-round series lead over the Knicks with a 118-107 victory. The series resumes Wednesday n ight in Indianapolis, with Game 6 back in New York on Friday night, if necessary. In Inglewood, Calif., yesterday, Eddie Jones produced a career playoff-high for the third straight game, scoring 32 points as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Sonics 112-100. The Lakcrs have won all three of those games to take a 31 lead in the best-of-7 Western Conference semifinal series. Game 5 will be played tomorrow night in Seattle, where the teams split the first two games. A sixth game, if necessary, will be played Thursday night at the Forum, with a seventh game, if needed, Saturday in Seattle. As is usually the case, Shaquille O'Neal led the Lakers with 39 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and five blocked shots. In Charlotte, with Michael Jordan struggling much of the game to find his shooting touch, Scottie Pippen fought off back pain to spark a third-quarter surge that sent the Chicago Bulls past the Hornets 94-80. The vict0ry put the Bulls up 3-1 in their best·of-7 Eastern Conference semifinal.
