UNIVERSITY JOURNAL• SOUTHERN UTAH UNIVERSITY • WEDNESDAY, APR.IL 8, 1998 SUU sewing classes • • • assist cr1s1s center By JANELLE PHILLIPS JOURNAL STAFF WRITER " I thought it was very fun, and nice to do something for someone else and know it was going towards something of value and importance," said Annette Allan, family and consumer s.cience major from Cedar City. Jacque Marchant, adjunct clothing and textiles instructor, teaches one class each quarter of either beginning or intermediate sewing. This quarter Marchant is the instructor for beginning sewing. Marchant sa id for each of her classes, the final project is to make something for the Cedar City Women's Crisis Center. She said students learn a lot and enjoy serving others. She said she believes in "service learning;'' where you provide a service for someone e lse while learning a ski ll. " It gives you a nice warm feeling that you are doing something for someone e lse," said Marchant. According to Marchant, most of the families which t urn to the wee for help, leave their homes with no thing. These fam ilies turn to the wee for fear of abuse and the center offers them a safe place. Marchant said, "This project is a good way for us to provide them with some new clothing or something soft and warm." One particular assignment for her students last year, was to make something.soft and cuddly for the children at the wee. Marchant said her students immediately became involved. They brough t old batting and fabric from home to make blankets and stuffed animals for the children at the center. Marchant mentioned that the highest need for clothing at the wee is for the high school age kids, because not very many people donate it ems for that age group. According to Marchant that's where college students can help most; if they have anything in their closet that they don't wear, the wee is a lways in need. She said her class often donates new articles of clothing, but anything helps. Kaer Neumann, a family and consumer science major from Las Vegas, Nev., said, "I thought it was a good opportunity to use a s kill for som eone e lse, and a lot of the time w e don't get that opportunity."
