Show THE ARTS 1111 Students to perform with community orchestra Clarinet and piano soloists from SVU are joining the Orchestra of Southern Utah on Sunday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m., in Orchestra Hall, 75 N. 300 W. The suggested donation is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Darryl Schwierjohn has selected the hvely Rondo of Mozart's Cllliinet Concerto m A Ma7or. The semor music education major will graduate from SUU in June. He 1i; £rom Texas and currently studies with Michael Dean while performmg in several SUU music groups. Previous teachers include Frank Albright, Robert Walzel and Lydia Reid. Schwierjohn was a memb~r of the Texas Junior College All-State Band for two years, the Utah rncercollegiate Band for two years and the College Band Directors National Associate Intercollegiate Band this year. He earned an Assocfates Degree from South Plains College and is a member of the Knights of Columbus at Christ the King Catholic Church in Cedar has performed with SUU Wind Ensemble, Concert Choir, Opera and Orchestra, and m ost recently played sister Mary Ma.nilow in Nunsense. She currently studies with Don Massengale. Other teachers include Joanne Ueki, Dee Seamon and Lmda Stump. She 1s rhe daughter of Jerold and Janet Carpenter, who reside in Cedar City. Dvorak's New World Symphony was written while the composer lived in America. He combined clements of Negro songs, especially spuituals, with modal melodies from his native Bohemia (Czech Republic and Slovakia area). Dvorak served as director of the National Conservatory of Music for three years in New York. He was homesick for Bohemia and spent the summers m Spillville, Iowa, which was popuJated by Bohemians. While in Sp1llville the composer orchestrated the popular symphony, and was first performed by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in 1893. C laude-Michel Schoenberg wrote the music £or the intcmationaUy famous musical, Les Miserables, which was based on Victor Hugo's novel of the same title. This medley takes five of the most famous numbers arranged by Bob Lowden.
