Orrin Hatch said yesterday. Hatch, R-Utah, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Comm'ittee, told a conference that the Justice Department's antitrust scrutiny of the giant software maker was warranted. Hatch, whose state is home to Microsoft competitor Novell, said "high stakes" are involved in Justice's October antitrust lawsuit. The suit says Microsoft was using its dominance in the Windows 95 operating system software to gain market share for its Internet Explorer program. Hatch's criticism of the Redmond, Wash.,-based company has put him at odds with the state's two U.S. senators. PROSECUTORS, POLICE TO SCREEN CASE AGAINST TEEN HOSTAGE-TAKER: Prosecutors prepared yesterday to screen their case against a teen-age gunman who took a junior high school cafeteria hostage before being subdued by police 586-5511 officers. Syracuse Police Chief Brian Wallace said he and other law enforcement officials would meet today with Davis County Attorney Brian Namba to decide on charges the 14-year-old would face. However, Wallace said he was certain the boy booked into the Farmington Bay juv enile facility for investigation of kidnapping and assault - would not be tried as an adult. The boy jwnped onto the Syracuse Junior High School cafeteria stage, fired his pistol into the ceiling and told students not to move.
