Show N I s I T y Burns birthday bash is tomorrow Convocations students may receive credit for attending dinner or lecture Scottish poet Robert Burns, born 239 years ago yesterday, will be the focus of a dinner and lecture tomorrow evening in SUU's R. Haze Hu nter Conference Center. The dinner, featuring a number of Scottish foods, will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Steve Gilbert Great Hall. Entertainment at the dinner will include poetry recitations, bagpipe music, and toasts to Burns. Following the dinner, Dr. Frederick Stewart Buchanan, a University of Utah faculty member raised in southwest Scotland where Burns lived, will present a lecture on the poet's life. Reservations for the dinner must be confirmed by noon today by calling 586-7835. The dinner is $10 per plate. The 7:30 p.m. lecture, which is free and open to the public, will also be in the Gilbert Great Hall. The dinner will feature a menu of tossed salad with vinaigrette; Scotch broth; lamb, barley and vegetable soup; baguette rolls with butter; stuffed pork chops; sauteed cabbage and mixed vegetables; rosemary roasted baby red potatoes; clapshot; English trifle with oatmeal shortbread;and beverages. Both th e dinner and the lecture will feature music by the renowned SUU Bagpipe Band. "Robert Burns accomplished so much in his 37 years of life," said Steven D . Bennion, SUU president. "It is fitting that we hear of those accomplishments in an enchanting Scottish accent from Dr. Buchanan, this native Scot of Ayshire, whose own life has been · profoundly shaped by the life of Bums, the famous bard. It will be a special evening of rare entertainment and enlightenment. " Kilts may be worn to the activities in honor of Burns, Bennion said. Burns is the author of such works as "My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose," "To a Mouse," "Auld Lang Syne," "Tam O'Shanter," "John Barleycorn: A Ballad," and "A Man's a Man For A' That." SUU students enrolled in the winter quarter SUU Convocations class, UNIV 201, may receive credit for attending the dinner or lecture. |
