The festivities were the final step in opening the 1,300-seat facility at Park City High School. Prior to Cosby's performance, milling crowds filled the center's lobby and munched on cheeses, vegetables and breads while being entertained by a Utah Symphony wind ensemble. " It kind of puts Park City on the map in terms of the performing arts," said former Utah Jazz center Mark Eaton, a resident of nearby Jeremy Ranch. " Everybody talks about the negative aspects of growth, but this is one of the positive aspects." ATTORNEY SAYS GOD IS BACKING STATE LAWS AGAINST LESBIAN TEACHER: I ' ' I I I Hours: I , Mon-Fri 9 I THE UNIVERSITY JOURNAL• SOUTHERN UTAH UNIVERSITY• MONDAY, JANUARY 12, 1998 a.m.- 9 p.m. • Sat 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Walk-ins Welcome Spanish Fork teacher Wendy Weaver may have the American Civil Liberties Union to back her up, but the lawsuit opposing her has God on its side, according to the attorney for Weaver's angry accusers. "Miss Weaver may win her federal lawsuit," said Matt Hilton, a Utah County lawyer. " But a different result will ensue under those laws that were ctivinely inspired, an d that I believe will be divinely enforced." Hilton made the rem arks to the Utah Eagle Forum, which had its annual convention at Utah Valley State College. Hilton represents a coalition of Utah County parents who oppose the efforts of Weaver, a lesbian, to continue coaching volleyball at Spanish Fork High School. After hearing about Hilton's comments, Weaver's attorney likened the sentiment to the assaults on civil rights during the 1960s. " lf God's on their side, then God's a bigot," said Rick Van Wagoner, a lawyer practicing in Salt Lake City. TRAIN DEMONSTRATION PLANNED FOR LEGISLATORS, PUBLIC: Commuter-rail proponents are planning a one-day train demonstration next month for legislators and other elected Wasatch Front officials, but residents and potential commuters will have to wait until later this year for their free rides. Commuter rail has been proposed to run from Brigham City to Payson. Congress has appropriated $4 million for planners to design the system and run demonstration projects. But so far, none of that money is available for use in any of the demonstrations.
