Students trying to decide on a m ajor may want to find out about the communication department curri culum. Students graduate from this program with specific job training sk ills and wi th general ski lls that can be applied to working in professional organiza tions. In the com m unication depa rt ment, there arc five ways fo r studen ts on campus to involve th e mselves with hands-o n experience. Radio 91 I, the department radio stat ion, provides students with experience not only as D]'s, bu t as on-a ir news reporters, and program dfrcctors. Second, the University fournal (t he campu s newspaper) gives students a chance to learn t he responsibilities of reporting and editing before they find an internship and, in fact, provides internshi ps itself to some students. T hird, SUTV, C han nel 9, involves st udents in the art of television. It gives them valuable experience in news and sports broadcasti ng a nd public information program ming. In addition Pearson said, "We have begun an adve rtising an d public relation s laborator y as well." In this type of lab, students lea rn, th rough hands-on experience, practical kn owledge in volved in advert ising, and public relation s. The department also spon sors a highl y-rated forensic program that has been successful for a number of years. Pearson att ributes th is success to the caliber of students and the coach es. Among the many awards garnered by t he fore nsic students a rc fo ur Al IAmerica ns a nd on e " Best Speaker in the Nation" Award. Bot h specific and general skills are taught by this depart ment . Specific ski lls are targeted at prepa ring students fo r t he job market. T hese ski lls app ly to professiona lly oriented degrees. General skills arc taught because they equip students with effective th inking and communicat ion ski lls which wi ll help t hem ach ieve their person a l goa ls. Faculty members in the commun ication depa rtment inc lude Pearson (department head and professor of communication); associate professors Lionel Grady, Suza nne Larson and Patricia Paystrup; assistant professors Art Challis, Terry West, John McCann and Jon Smith; and instructor Troy Hu nt.
