Show THE CAMPUS Alumni House Observatory is open • renovations • continue A family might be the key ingredient in turning a house into a home, but a roof he lps too-and that's exactly what alumni officials had in mind when scbedul ing the latest renovation efforts at the J. Reuben C lark, Jr. Alumni Hou se. According to Marlo Jensen, director of alumni relations at Southern Utah University, w orkers will finis h tarring and rcshingling the Alumni House roof sometime this week, enabling renovation efforts inside the building to begin as wel I. "We had a few leaks in the roof, and we didn't want to begjn the indoor renovations until ail the shingles w ere in place," Jensen said. Th ose who haven 't visited the building s ince its da ys of serv ice as an LOS Institute might be surprised at the many c hanges that have already taken place at the site, the alumni director sa id. "We welcome visits from anyone who would like to sec how the renovation is coming along," Jensen added. "We'd love to ta lk abou t our plans, to show you what's been done, and to show you what we're planning to do in the future." With all the recent public fascination about space exploration that's hit recently, many local residents have a chance to do a little exploration of the stars themselves. Southern Utah University offers everyone a chance to come out to the Ashcroft Observatory. Founded by SUU professor Theron Ashcroft, who taught ast ronomy and promoted the program, the observatory is located just behind Leigh Hill , about three miles outside of Cedar City. Public star shows are set for every Monday night at 9:30 p.m. "On a clear night, you can see some pretty impressive things," said Kris C hilds, SUU lecturer of astro nom y. Childs says the obse rvatory is reserved on Tuesdays and Wednesdays fo r students taking the astronom y class, but Thursdays can be reserved fo r special groups to come out and star gaze. In th e summer, t he observatory w on 't open until 9:30, to give the s un time to set, and give stargazers som ething to look at . "You can see Mars and Jupiter at this time of yea r. When the moon is up, that's pretty spectacular thro ugh a telescope. The Milky Wa y is visible, you can sec some neat star clusters and a whole ga laxy," C hilds says. The observatory does have telescopes, and an assista nt is there to he lp people find the ri ght things. T he Ashcroft O bservatory is run partially by donations, which wi ll help the facil ity to relocate to a better place. One of the worst th ings for star gazi ng is light po llution, and as Cedar C ity expands, the light ema nated from those businesses and homes makes it more difficult to see the stars, Childs says. SUU plans to move the Observatory one day to a new location up Ceda r Moun tai n. Whet he r they arc a serious or beg inning astron omer, everyone will find someth ing fascinat ing in the sky, says C hilds. " It's a neat treat just to sec these objects. T he stars, planets, it's just a ll a lot of fun ." - Cedar City!
