Bennion, the 14th president of the institution, moved into his office and began administration of the university Tuesday. He's the grandson of the institution's first chief executive, Milton Bennion. Bcnnion's first few days at SUU were filled with meetings in his office with the deans and vice presidents as well as tou rs around campus and meetings with other uni vcrsity personnel. · · The new president, 55, had served since 1989 as president of Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho. Prior to that he was the President of Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, from 1982-1989. Other higher education administrative responsibilities have included being the Associate Commissioner of Planning for the Utah System of Higher Ed ucation, the Project D irector for the Wisconsin Statewide Study of Nursing and Nursing Education and Academic Planner-Health Sciences, and the Academic Planner and Program Coordinator for the University of Wisconsin System. Bennion earned his Ph.D . in educational administration with a minor in organizational behavior at the University of Wisconsin. He has previous teaching experience at Snow College where he was an instructor of political science. Bennion was born in Salt Lake Ci ty and is married to Marjorie Hopkins. T hey are the parents of five children, and have five grandchildren. Bennion has said, "SUU's motto 'Learning Lives Forever' captures much of what my philosophy of education is. A university is established as a center of learning. It is designed to provide people with know ledge and skills that will at least provide a philosophy and vision that may last forever. While specific facts and knowledge may become outdated, the love of learning never grows old. And the process of learning and how we learn arc continually important to us. I also believe that creating an envi ronment for learning is vital. Valuing individuals, their capacities to learn, their different and varied tale nts all enhance the learning process. Building a cooperative learning envi ronment is likewise important . The best teachers are excit ed learners. To build and strengthen the learning environment with colleagues at SUU is both a formidable challenge and an exciting opportunity . 11 Bennion replaced Gerald R. Sherratt, who retired June 30 after l 5 l /2 years as president. I |
