Work is progressing rapidly 0 11 the renovation of the Coliseum of Southern Utah, slated to open next month with its newly expanded senting capacity of 10,000 and increc1sed office, wieght room and locker room space. When completed, the facility will be knoivn as the Eccles Coliseum, thanks to a $500,000 donation from the George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation . Community members, faculty, staff, administration, s tudents, and corporations, marshalled by campaign chair Rich Wilson. banded together to raise the necessary $2 million to complete project. A large share of support for the pro1ect came through the installation of suites, corporate and family boxes, and individual chair-backed seats 111 the Coliseum's west .«randstand. Demolit10n of the previously existing structure was undetaken ,n November, following the Thunderbirds' final home game of the 1996 season. Constructed in 1968, the Coliseum of Southern Utah wasa renovated because 1t no longer met state safety codes or federal disability statutes. The renovation provides, among other ameniues, an elevator accessing the Cohseum's grandstand sections and safer, more comfortable steps and aisles at the structure. I Steve Allen, elected SVUSA president by a wide mar.gin in campus voting April 23, will be installed Apnl 21. He replaces outgoing chief executive Valarie Olson . With his fellow Time party cand idates Marli Maxfield as the new academic vice president-elect and Tasha Adams elected as activities vice president, Allen said his executive council for 1997-98 will be the group he wanted to work with from day one. " I am glad to be working with Tasha and Marli we have the same visions for SUV,'' he said. Allen, a 1un1 o r communication ma1or and political science minor from Mont1 cc ll o, won the election with 789 votes, over opponent Russell Kcnnt.:dy's 488 votes. The win came after a record 28.7 percent student voter turnout. " I look forward to serving nt.:xt year, to meeting m o1c students and making sure they feel welcome and involved," Allen added Allen said he plans to follow through o n his campaign promises, including the addition of a Greek organization liaison to SUUSA's list of appo inted positions. " Right now, we' re not sure if we will place the new position under ca binet or STAB; we want to sec whe re it wi ll be th e m ost beneficial " Allen sa id. In the largest party victor y in severa l years at SUU, senatorial win ne rs, 10 of 12 of whom were m embers of Time, were Jenn ife r Durcan (US), Amy Jo Tyler (T) and Rob Reynard (T) for t he Co llege of Arts, Letters and Humanities; Julie Adams (T), Jan e Miller (T) and Julie Black for th e College of Education; Tat e Brya n (T), David Adam s (T) an d Scan Stu cki (T) for t he Co ll ege of Science; and Mary Hcy born c (US), Mi cho n Ott (T) and Brook Madsen (T ) fo r th e College of Bus iness, Techn ology and Communication. President-elect Allen, wh o wi ll ta ke office w it h the rest of last night's victo rs in June, said he is looking forward to com muni cating with th e s tudent body and th e ad m inistratio n. Maxfield also expressed interes t in making faculty and s taff m o re in volved in SUUSA. Maxfield said s he feels good a bout the fact t ha t her party did we ll as a w hole in t he e lect ion . "We have been work ing toget her fo r six m onths, so we kn ow each o ther's quali ties and ho w to use eac h o ther's strengths." "I am glad that the things we promised are so do-able " Allen said of his pledges to th e students of SUU. " I am' excited to start visi tin g with Valarie !O lson, current SUUSA president!, getti ng advice and learning the ropes to make th e transition run smoothly. " Allen said fresh faces were the key to his party's success. "Our party is a fresh group with new ideas. We want to have an effect on every student-we want every student to have a friend in SVUSA," said Allen . |
