SUU President Gerald R. Sherratt ran into an old friend from Logan, Utah, last night at his reception for new students at the Institutional Residence attended by hundreds. He introduces Freshman Suzanne Raymond to SUUSA President Valarie Ekins. Sherratt has known the Raymond family for decades. TODAY'S JOURNAL: DAYCARE CENTER OPENS: The first day of school at SUU will be a large event for students both big and small. This day marks the opening of the SUU Daycare. 3 QUALITY OF STUDENTS ON RISE: SUU was always looking for a few good men and women. But now these men and women are looking for SUU ....3 --..-~~~~-FINANCIAL AID AVAILABLE: For once, let the government give back some of the money it took away. Pell grant and financial aid money is still available to help Financial Aid students pay for Director school. 4 Rex Michie HONORS CLASSES SHINE: Honors classes are offered for those students willing to go above and beyond the normal standards. 4 WELCOME..FORATLEAST A WEEK: Welcome Week helps take the scariness out of being a freshman. It's also a great time to meet others. 3 ELEGANT BUSINESS: It may be hard to pronounce his name, but Renn Zaphiropoulos's "Elegance In Business" course comes across loud and clear. 6 TAKE A BITE...Middle school kids may look cute and innocent but looks can be deceiving. But we don't suggest trying to smuggle anything illegal, for it may be searched. 14 ELECTRONIC MAIL: Many SUU students are waiting at the on-ramp of the Information Super Highway. A free and easy e-mail account will help them merge right into traffic. 14 BE INDEPENDENT!: Are you looking to be your own boss? SUU's Independent Study program will fulfill that need, at least while attending school. 14 SUUUUMMERTIIIIIME...: Whoever thought summers in Cedar City were uneventful, obviously never spent one here. Many faculty changes were made, the USF grew, and several associated with SUU passed away. 15 ON BEING AN ARTFUL DODGER: Students can now get academic credit for "surfing" the net. Ar't 101 is again offered at SUU via the World Wide Web. 24 SHA SHA NA NA, GET A JOB: Jobs are a necessary evil for many SUU students. Plus more about America, including what about John-John. 21 CONFERENCE CALL: SUU's athletic program will join the Mid-Continent Conference beginning fall of 1997. The new conference will require extensive travel for the teams, but will save money on it. 29 IT'S CONVO TIME!: Gentry Lee will offer SUU students a glimpse into the future during T hursday's Convocation lecture. 18, 19 A SHARPER IMAGE: SUU professor Joe Sharp takes a personal look into the life of Gentry Lee. 19 WORLD NEWS: Saddam Hussein praises his armies for action against the Kurds and the U.S. in northern Iraq. 22 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT: Cedar City provides a variety of entertainment outlets.
