Show THE ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT '95-96 was multi-faceted year in the aits at SUU Throughout the year the campus has been very busy with music concerts, theatre productions, unplugged series, dance performances and various other performers coming to SUU. MUSIC The year started out with a faculty vocal recital given by Jennifer Jarivs Seamons, and William Mardsen on October 3. On November 2 there was a concert directed by Robert Henderson with the Utah Symphony. On November 16 the SUU Symphony Orchestra performed with composers from England, Russia, Germany, and United States. Amy Greenwood, a sophomore music major performed at the Abravanel Hall as a soloist with the Utah Symphony, on November 21. Events during the winter quarter include the Cedar High Country Fiddle performance at SUU on January 29. The University Symphony gave a recital conducted by David C. Cole, on February 22, 25. On February 24, Salt Lake City native Grant Johannesen gave a piano recital. On February 21-25 the Symphony Orchestra performed a children's opera 'Who 's Afraid of the Big Bad Orchestra.' The Orches tra of Southern Utah performed with six young soloist m usicians including Garret Stein, Marlo Madsen, Holly Dean, C h ristine Dunway, Jim Wilcox, and David Cran e on February 29. On March 3, the SUU concert choir and OPUS performed their annual winter concert as a benefit to raise money for OPUS to go on tour to England. On March 4, the SUU Jazz Ensemble gave a recital conducted by, Jim Williamson. O n March 7 the SUU Wind Ensemble gave a recital conducted by Michael Dean. During spring quarter the music department gave 15 different presentations given by the faculty and students . Those 15 events included 27 different performances. Some of those events included, a concert by the Wind Ensemble (formally SUU Concert Band ) who performed a concert "A March Concert in March." A flute recital was given by faculty member K. Dawn Grapes at the Tuacahn Center on March 12. The Southern Utah Choral Festival was held in the Centrum on April 13. The festival consisted of high school students from Utah, and Nevada. The Suzuki String Quartet performed on April 14 at Cedar High. The Abramyan String Quartet, performed a concert at SUU on April 16. The music department produced a production of Guys and Dolls on April 17-20. Acclamations gave its final concert 'The 1995-96 Acclamation Revue' on April 29 and 30. The Acclamations also went on tour throughout southwestern and central Utah during the month of May. On May 20 the Jazz Ensemble held their seasonal concert, conducted by David C. Cole. On May 21 the University Symphony Orchestra performed their final concert. On May 23 The Wind Ensemble performed their last concert with guest artist violinist Melissa Lewis, conducted by David C. Cole. OPUS left on an eight day-tour of England, London, Manchester, and Stratford on May 6. The group performed exchange concerts, and competitions and returned on May 14. Senior recitals w ere given all throughout the year some of the students that gave recitals included Will Stucki, Amy Vikins, Aimee Montoya, Lauralyn Anderson, Allisen Pedersen, and Jennifer Hartman. DANCE The Ririe Woodbury Dance Company performed for the fall Convocation series as well as an evening performance on November 9. Lula Washington's Contemporary Dance Theatre came to SUU on January 17. The Ballroom Dance Company performed for the February Gala celebration at Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake. On March 1 the Ballroom Dance Company was host to the first ever dance competition. High school students from Utah and Idaho competed. The dance department produced a faculty dance concert on March 6. Children, students, faculty, and professionals performed for this event. Orchesis, SUU's modern dance company, left for the American The popular student-directed one act plays performed on January 10-13. God spell was also produced by Stage Il, the all student production musical is based upon the Gospel according to Matthew from the bible. The production went from January 24-27. The theatre arts and dance produced A Man for All Seasons on February 7-10 and 14-17. The play was based on the life of Sir Thomas More. Fred C. Adams directed the musical, The Secret Garden, on April 25-27 and May 1-4. The musical was adapted from the well known children's novel. UNPLUGGED The unplugged series was performed every Wednesday afternoon in the Student Center Living Room. Unplugged was under the direction of Keri Mecham. Artists that performed include Sage, Beth Macintosh, Doug Wintch, Mr. Jones and the Previous, Kevin Connally, David Harris, Paul Cardell, Larsen and Scott, The Zookeepers, Peter Breinholt, Anna Smith, Jeff Childs, and Bucket ART The Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery opened up for t he year on September 9. The gallery had several different exhibits throughout the year. In October there was an exhibition overview of the artistic heritage of the kingdom Morocco. In January, th ere was 'About Face,' an exhibit of culture masks. February featu red a faculty art show, w hich displayed works of SUU fac ulty mem bers. A benefit auction was held on February 2 to help raise money for the Braithwaite gallery. Mike Malm displayed his senior portfolio during the month of Ma,rch. During the month of May there was an annual student arts exhibition, featuring 36 different works from SUU students. Also during this year Lydia Johnson took the position of Art gallery director, when former director Mandy Brooks left. POETRY READINGS College Dance Festival on March 20. Ballroom Dance Company performed on March 26 and the 27 with special guests from Center Stage, a local dance studio. The Waukeenyans performed 'When She Danced' on April 3 as well as numerous half-time performances during football and basketball games. Orchesis produced their last concert, 'Life's Rhythms,' of the year. For Native American Week the Lamanite Generation performed their native dances on April 13. TiiEATRE The theatre department started out the year with Amadeus which ran October 5-7. Stage II, the performing part of Masque club, produced the play. The next production was 'The Diviners' on October 19-21 and the 25-28. It was directed by Chris Mayse . The SUU Literary Guild presented several poetry readings throughout the year. Many of the presenters were faculty, and students form SUU. Some of the readings included Leslie Norris, Dave Lee, Kay Cook, Julie Simon, Bill Ransom, Danielle Dubrasky, S.S. Moorty, Susan Elizabeth Howe, Katherine Coles, and writers from the Paunsagunt Review. OITHER ATIRACTIONS Also during the year the Starlight club presented a fall concert featuring the Trenchcoats, an a cappella singing group from Washington. The Oakridge Boys also played in Cedar during the month of December, presented by the Cedar City Area Chamber of Commerce, and KSSD. The Cedar City Music Arts Council brought to SUU the Pirates Of Penzance during the month of February. |
