Show SU Gyntnasts finish second Six 'Birds are named to NCAA All-Academic team Defending national academic cha mpion Southern U tah University fmi hed econd to Nebra ka in this year's gymna tics all-academic team race, it wa announced thi week by the NCAA. Southern Utah and Nebraska witched place af er the Hu ker fini hed econd to the Thunderbirds in l994. The Thunderbird gymnasts checked in with a combined GPA of 3.488, down Cr m la t year' 3.542, while Nebraska's thlete posted a combined GPA of 3.561, up from 443 in 1994. Cal tat 'Fullerton was third at 3.430. Julie Talbot, a junior fr m Pr o, Utah, pac d the Thund rbird with a p rfecl 4.0 GPA Ju.ring the 1994-95 academic year. Joining Talbot on the team arc returning quad members Stacy Fullmer ( r., Murray, Utah) with a PA of 3.667, Janica Hayes ( r., andy, Utah) at .648, and Kimberly Nomura ! o., Sand , Utah) at 3.542; J well a Conner quad member Janice Gabehart (Wheat Ridge, Colo.; 3.896), and Mindy Johnson (Price, Utah; 3.624). "While I' m plea ed that we fini hed among the top two team in the nation thl year, I'm still disappointed that we slipped out of th top spot," SUU Head Gymna tics Coach Scott Bauman said. " Now we have two goals for the upcoming ea on: to qualify for !the NCAA Midwest Regional Meet] and to regain the na tional academic champion hip. "The fac t that we have been abl e to fini h so high the la t two years traight ju t illu trates the calibre of a hlete we have at Southern Utah Univer ity," he added. "We've been in the top two in the clas room and among the t p-25 in the gym for two years running now and I don't e that comin t an end anytime oon. "Tho e girls who didn't make th [allacademic] team feel lik they dragged us down a littl bit last year and that maybe they're re pon ible for the fact we dropped from first to econd, o they're especiall y m otiva ted to pick it up in the classroom this season," he pointed out.
