Show Q,PINION ,.- MIKE ROYKO COMMENTARY - Extremists miss target over guns When th ubje t i gun , we defin itely have a failure to comm unicate. Those who hate gun s cm to bcliev lhat Lho e who don't are a lot of lowbrow, beady- yed, beer-guzzling neo-fa ci t who are con tantly lea ving pi tol around the house o children can find them and hoot their iblings .. Tho c who defend un ownership cem to think that guncontrol advocate are a bunch of left-wing, gov rnmcnt-loving, wine- ippiag is ies. That' why I eld m write about the endles trugglc between gun owner and gun hater , even thou h I th ink I understand them better than they under tand each other. For example, many gun lov r seem to believe that any guncontrol law that imposes any restriction on gun owner hip i a bad law. If you carry that t its illogical conclu ion, we would have no gun laws and no restriction . It would be legal for anyone responsible citizen or nut - to buy a gun as easily as a bottl of root beer. We need gun laws. How re trictive they should be, I don ' t know. But reasonable people should be able to agree on terms that would help keep guns away from dangerous hands while letting decent people protect themselves. "Protect themselves?" someone is scornfully saying. "They don't protect themselves or anyone else. they just let their guns fall into the hands of children or criminals." That's the response of many of those who dislike guns and want a European approach: Nobody has them but the cops or rigidly controlled sportsmen. And I think they truly believe that hardly anyone ever u es a gun to shoot or fend off a criminal. Maybe that's the fault of the media. We seldom overlook a story about a child using his dad's gun to shoot his older sister. But we aren't as alert to storie about people who ping a crook. There are sowces for both kinds of stories. The gun-control advocates keep large files on every case of careless gun use they can find . But they don't have any records of people successfully defending themselves against criminals. At the ame time, the National Rifle Association has thick fil of hone t citizens using guns to kill, wound or capture criminals. But under F in its file cabinets, there is nothing about family gun tragedies. Mike Royko is a syndicated olumnist writing for tl1e Chicago Tribune. Some people know that on April 6, 1830, the " Church of C h rist" was organiz e d in Fayette, N e w York. Th calendar we have today did not exi t until 1582 when Pope Gregory XIII established what is ca ll ed to day th e Gregorian Calendar. Before the pre ent Gregorian calendar, there wa the Julian Calendar named after Julius Caesar who estab lish e d it. July was named after him and Augu s t w a named after Emp ror Agu tus. People remember when the wise men came to Jerusalem, looking for the newborn king, or mes iah, that had been prophesied abo ut, over 700 years before.King Herod sent them to Bet hl eh e m to find him and th e n return and report. They didn' t return and report, so Herod killed all the children two years old and under. (Matthew 2: 16) Josephus, the ancient Jewis h Historian in his work "Antiquities of the Je ws," page 365 tells us of an "eclipse" of the moon in early Marc h , Jul ian year 4 710, which compares to our 4 B.C. Josephus, on the next page 366, tells of King H erods death right after the "eclipse " of the moon in 4710. We know from modern astronomical calculations that th e "eclipse" was on March 13, 4 . B.C. the Julian year 4710 . Think! Things are out of order, Christ was born befor King Herod died. In fact when Herod had the Children killed, Jesus was in Egypt where Joseph and Mary had fled with him. Our present calendar i five years off the "True" date. It 's really 1999! Since Jesus was born . at sundown Apr i l 6, 1995 it will be 2000 years since the shepherd were abiding in the field, keeping watch over th e ir fl ock by ni g ht , and th e ange l announced th e birth of Chri t.
