Don Fehr is a lawyer by nature as much as by training. When these two men get together, patience is more a weapon than a virtue. As leaders of the two group that have already seen fortunes large and small go up in smoke, each would eem to be in a hurry to dou the fire consuming all tha t cash. But these are not men in a hurry to accompli h anything; only in a h uny to l ok like bey are. These are not men interested in a c mpromi e; only men intere ted in l king lik they are. Alter Seli and Fehr met across a table for four hours Tue day, the fir t formal meeti ng between repre entative of the two sides in two we ks end d with nly an agreement to me t again. That e i n, cheduled for today, d e n't figure to improve much on Tue day' in the way of progre s. And no matter what ither man say , the fir t time to I k for anything re embli ng progre i at lea t three week 0££ and m aybe as many as ix. A ked late Tuesday whether he £eh any anxiety o er aU th tim that had already b en wa ted - n w nearly seven months and counting - a puzzled look crossed Fehr' fcnturcs. ''lo these lands of negotiation ," he aid, "you're going to have lot f tarts and top ." And for the time b ing, expect a I t more top than tarts. That' an important part of playing the waiting game. When elig followed Fehr at the podium, h , too, waved off que tion ab ut pecific is ue . But elig did sa thal under urgin from mediator W.J. U cry, the two ·idc talked frankly about the lingering re entmcnt each one carried ov r from contentious ntract talk tretchmg ba k nearly three decades. Tho c exchange , saiJ lig. were "thcrapcuti ... candid ... a cathar i f r both ide ." A m ment later, he et off on a narrative that r called the f ud between the Hatfiel and the McCoys, marveling at how the bittcrncs inherited by the curr nt participant in the talk had utla tcd fiv comnu 1oncr and evcral generation f owners and playe~ . "And the one con tant," he aid, "ha hecn crimony." The object le on in history is appreciated, bu t a cla s in current ven woul d have b n m re to th point. Th past, contentious as its been, wa n t the m ajor impediment to a settlement. It wa alway how much longer Selig and Fehr could drag thi thing out in the service of achieving total victory, bow much longer they could counsel patience to their respective camps, growing more restless by the day. On April 2, the New York M ts open the regu lar season by visiting the Florida Marlin . On that same date, after losing small chunks of change for mo t of pring training, the owners start losing out on real money again. Two weeks after that is the first payday, when the players star lo ing out on real money again. Between now and then, neith er side has incentive to settle or enough leverage to force the other to do the same. That' why everyone was so agreeable Tuesday. Resuming the talks in Milwaukee, two weeks alter President Clinton took a swing at a settlement and missed, was mediator W.J. Usery' idea. And it was a go done. It had some symbolic vaJue, since this is Selig's hometown. It had value as a photo-op, since both Selig and Fehr could appear to be doing me work. But it had no chance of producing anything meaningful - yet. The owners have already paid for pring training with their replacement players and they plan to see it though, unles there is another Sparky Anderson ou t there or sometning el e tha t will cause the whole scheme to collapse of its own fraudulent weight. The players have already paid for their spring off, and they plan to see it through, too, unless enough of them break ranks to force a return en ma . Neither worst-ca e cenario i likely to be fulliUed . But the best guess here is that ome elements of each wiU create enough pre sure to fray Selig's nerves, or Fehr's and force a settlement by the start of the regular eason or two weeks into it. • No one wiU win completely and both will hare some of the blame. It couldn't happen to two nicer guys. |
