Monday's meeting with be the l 0th between the two schools. Southern Utah holds a 6-3 advantage in the series, which began in 1989. The two team split a pair of meets last year, with the Pioneers winning in Denv r, l 6.825- 185.500, and the Thunderbirds prevailing in Cedar city, 184.375-1 2.500. At Provo, SU' Angi, Gunnell won the all-around and floor competitions, but Brigham Yow1g won the meet as the Cougar posted their be t team score of the sea on, a 192.350, in picking up their econd win of the eason over the 'Birds. SUU scored its second-lowest mark of the season, a 187.700. SUU has set school records in four individual and one team categories this season. SUU's legislative efforts to play in-state schools in basketball every year are over. SU's administration released the announcement in a brief statement: The Southern Utah University administration has requested Rep. Bud Bowman IR-Cedar City) to withdraw hls bill whlch would have required the four Utah public universities to play each other in home and home basketball series every other year. Rep. Bowman has indicated he will honor the request. Given that the bill has 39 co-signers and only 38 votes are needed for passage, we think the possibility of its approval, at least in the Utah House of Representatives, would have been excellent. At the same time, we are reluctant to use the legislative process to implement what we believe the athletic departments of the four public universities should have done on their own. The University has been plea antly surprised by the outpouring of support given to Rep. Bowman' bill, especially the overwhelming approval of sports nthusiasts in southern and rural Utah . Since it is apparent that ports fans in rural Utah want the opportunity to see northern Utah universiti splay here in Cedar City, the administration has directed its athletic department to only schedule northern Utah universities in basketball on a home and home basis, or, alternatively, on a neutral court such as the Delta Center. We understand that a home and home series has been approved by the Weber State University athletic department and SUU looks forward to resuming this valued series next year. Whatever reasons the University of Utah and Utah State University have for being reluctant to bring their basketball teams to Cedar City, SUU believes it is better to forego the competition rather than force the two northern Utah institutions to make a trip to rural Utah that they clearly do not want to make. The University expresses its sincere thanks to Rep. Bowman and the 38 other legislators who signed on the bill with him. While we would relish an opportunity to host our sister institutions in ba k tball here in Cedar City, and have confidence that our basketball team would acquit itself well in the comp titian, it is apparent that the time ha not yet arrived when the two univer itie would feel comfortable in bringing their teams to our arena and play before outhern Utah fan . The Univer ity b Ii ve that time wiU someday come. In the meantime, SUU will attempt to entice out tanding out-of- tate teams to the Centrum to provide rural Utah with th level of athletic competition it has reque ted and feel it deserves. We under tand negotiations are moving forward on h m e and home erie with Iclah , ldaho State, Mon tana State, and Boise State, as well as Weber State, of the Big Sky Conference, with Gonzaga and Pepperrune unjversitie , a well as universitie in the Western Athletic Conference, Big West and Big Eight conferences. .
